Summary of Northwest Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 22, 2007

By Dave Devine, Dyestat NW Regional Editor - Assistance by Rob Monroe

BOYS

1. North Central WA—
3. Central Valley WA—
4. Crater OR—
6. Mead WA—
7. Gig Harbor WA—
10. Mountain View ID—

In a Northwest cross country summit, six of the top ten teams met at the Bob Firman Invitational in Boise ID on 9/22. DyeStat was on-site, so full results and meet stories are posted here. The big story, of course, is that NW#4 Crater upset NW#1-US#3 North Central by a slim, 121-124 margin. North Central, along with Central Valley, Mead and unranked Ferris WA had a major Greater Spokane League meet only three days before Firman, a competition we also covered, here. Bob Firman team scores and top ten individuals are below, followed by brief notes for each NW-ranked team that raced there.

North Central – Looked great at the GSL 4-way dual, where they beat all three rivals, but faltered at Firman under a late surge by a very good Crater team. Kimpel and Dean were both top-10, and the next 3 were packed nicely, but a bit too far back to defeat Crater. Had a faster team average and overall team time than Crater, but it wasn’t enough.

Central Valley – Strong showing at the GSL meet, where they lost to NC, but beat Mead and Ferris for the first time. Entered the Firman meet ranked US#23, but ended up seventh in some very tight scoring, losing to NW#4 Crater, NC, 3 Utah teams, and the same Mead team they’d beaten on Wednesday. Taylor and Aguilar were in the top 20 at Firman, but the rest of the pack was spread too thin.

Crater – Made a late decision to enter the field at Firman instead of staying in-state at the 3-Course Challenge in Seaside OR, and the audible at the line paid off, big time. Took down as good a field as will be assembled in the Northwest, and came away feeling like there was still more in the tank. Santana was great up front, splitting up NC’s top pair, and the key was their 2-3-4 men blanketing places in the mid-20s, all ahead of NC’s 3rd runner.

Mead – Of the three GSL schools competing after their Wednesday donnybrook, Mead may have bounced back the best. Beaten by both NC and CV in the GSL meet, Mead ended up fourth here, beating two NW teams ranked behind them and Central Valley. Top runner Kelly Lynch may have been slightly off, losing to NC’s lead duo after beating them Wednesday, but the rest of the team filled in nicely behind.

Gig Harbor – As has been the case all season, Miles Unterreiner led the way for the Tides with his strong 4th place finish, but the team ended up ninth overall at Firman, hurt by the sizable gap back to their 4th and 5th men.

2. Jesuit OR—
Eschewing the tangle-up at Bob Firman, the second-ranked Crusaders stuck close to home for the Tigard Invitational, where they used a 22-second 1-5 spread to win handily. Their compression through 7 was only slightly more, at 38-seconds, and they placed that entire seven within the top ten of the race. In addition, their top two JV runners ran times in the JV race faster than their varsity #6. Deeeeeep.

5. Central Catholic OR—
Like their Oregon 6A rivals Jesuit, the Rams played it low-key this weekend and contested only a conference crossover meet on Wednesday. Top gun Taylor Morgan was back in action after missing last weekend’s meet for ACT testing, and he didn’t skip a beat as he took this one easily and his teammates poured home behind to take 6 of the top 10 places and secure the win.

8. Eisenhower WA—
The Cadets ventured south for the Pepperdine Invite and didn’t fare as well as fellow Washingtonians Snohomish, who came up 2nd in a very good field. Eisenhower was beaten by a slew of Cali teams, and found themselves 10th overall. Their 1-5 spread behind top finisher Bryan Simison (20th-16:40.82) was under a minute, but too deep into the field to make the sort of impact they might have hoped for.

This week they’ll be gearing up for the Nike Pre-Nationals meet in Portland, OR, where they’ll have a shot at some out of state competition.

GIRLS

1. Jesuit OR—
While fellow top-fivers Boise and Gig Harbor were having a rough day at Bob Firman, and St. Mary’s and Snohomish were embellishing their reputations at the Pepperdine Invite in CA, the Crusaders were laying low in Portland and contesting the Tigard Invitational, where they put 5 in the top ten, and were fronted by the sterling 17:42 effort by #1 finisher Adrienne McGuirk.

2. Gig Harbor WA—
3. Boise ID—

Gig Harbor and Boise, both expected to contest for the team title at the Bob Firman Invitational, had equally disappointing days, with Boise finishing ninth in front of a hometown crowd, and Gig Harbor ending up tenth. In addition to Mountain Brook AL and Trabuco HIlls CA, each was beaten by unranked NW team Bear Lake ID, and a clutch of Utah squads from the SW region. Boise had suffered some illnesses the previous week at the Tiger/Grizz Invite and these seemed to carry over to the Firman race. Gig Harbor’s top-5 runner Anna Kalbrener has been struggling with an iron deficiency, which was certainly a factor for the Tides. Both teams were out well in the opening mile, only to falter and seemingly lose confidence in the closing kilometer. Full results and coverage here.

5. Snohomish WA—

The formcharts were validated when NW#4 St. Mary’s topped NW#5 Snohomish at the inaugural Pepperdine Invitational on 9/22. St. Mary’s was third overall, with Snohomish one place back in fourth—both topped by NY#4 Warwick Valley and CA#9 Carlmont. St. Mary’s continues to feature a great 1-4 compression, 40-seconds at Pepperdine, with another 40 back to #5. Snohomish was slightly more spread out, but was fronted impressively by top-ten placer Ellie Bonner (19:29.11).

6. Eastlake WA—
The Wolves raced at the 3-Course Challenge in Seaside OR, a fun-format event in which team members draw lots to race an easy, a moderate, or a hard course. Team titles are awarded, but it’s difficult to draw conclusions about a team’s performance when their top 7 is scattered randomly through three different races, often facing asymmetrical competition (#1 racing another team’s #7 for instance). The 3 courses are of indeterminate length, and there’s copious mud.

Full results for Eastlake were unavailable.
