Big School Boys: Academy 41 Cibola 83 Sandia 95 Rio Rancho 105 Los Lunas 128 (19 Complete Teams)

For the last couple of weeks we have seen this battle played out with roughly the same result. Next week both Academy and Cibola will travel up “The Hill” to Los Alamos for that yearly battle on the thick fairways of the Los Alamos Golf Course. Adding the Bengals from Gallup to the field gives us a great battle of 4A and 5A powers.

As for this week the Red-Army looked as strong as ever. They had a gap of 35 seconds from 2-5 and 57 seconds from 2-7. They have room for error as the season of stress approaches for most teams.

Cibola has looked solid all season. Last year’s Cougars showed flashes of brilliance and then faded down the stretch. This squad has shown the consistency that has gained them the respect of coaches throughout the New Mexico.

5A Region 3 Championship
10/18/07

Wheat Ridge 28 Pomona 66 Fairview 77 Boulder 133 Highlands Ranch 135

Wheat Ridge’s pack time has looked rather ordinary over their last couple of races. They may be suffering from lack of competition. If that is the case they are in for a heavy dose of competition. The 5A Colorado State Meet is the most competitive meet in the Southwest Region and the Farmers will have to be on top of their game to walk away with the title.

Salt Lake City, UT

Davis 77 American Fork 109 Skyline 114 Bingham 142 Alta 144 (17 Teams in 5A)

The rocket like rise of American Fork was ended by a surprise performance from Davis. Credit the Davis frontrunners of Seth Gutzwiller and Spencer Anderson for finishing ahead of American Fork’s #1. Credit also has to be given to the rest of the pack for finishing their top 5 ahead of American Fork’s #5. Now all of the Utah teams have a full month off until the NTN Regional.

Mingus 16 Prescott 71 Bradshaw Mountain 72 Sedona 81 Chino Valley 98 Orme 165

Last week I mistakenly stated that Mingus was not deep. I was unaware that Mingus was rotating their #6 and #7 because the AIA does not allow seniors to compete in JV races. This week I have included the results from the JV race to paint a more complete picture of the Mingus team.

4A Utah State Championship
10/17/07
Salt Lake City, UT

Timpview 49 Mountain View 61 Mountain Crest 66 Orem 123 Springville175

Timpview ended the season as the best team in 4A and all of Utah as they came away from Salt Lake City with the 4A and Combined scores title. Timpview ran a very complete race by complimenting their front runners (Jonathan Nelson and Nathan Fletcher) with a 57 second pack time from 1-5.

As with other battles this season Mountain View and Mountain Crest showed that they are very strong from 1-4 and that their #5 were just not strong enough to catch Timpview. The Orem squad that performed solidly all season fell to 4th place at the state meet. This team may have faltered hear but they have shown great skill throughout the season. They should still be considered a threat at Tempe.

Rampart 33 Coronado 80 Palmer 117 Douglas County 157 Durango 159 (13 Complete Teams)

Last week’s 1 point victory over Coronado was an aberration. The real Rampart team showed up this week and hung a 47 point margin on Coronado. This team is running well at the right time. Their 54 second gap is impressive.

Division 3 Sweepstakes: Barstow 56 Galena 110 Palos Verdes 118 Cabrillo 132 Rio Rico 135 (23 Teams)

Galena has been the best team in Nevada all season but they have been flying under the radar in the southwest region. This week they were able to beat #9 Rio Rico in finishing 2nd in the Division 3 Sweepstakes race. Bryan Tidaduiza’s 15:19 was a mere 24 seconds off of Jim Walmsley’s (Horizon) time so we know that he is a legitimate front runner. His teammates had a 1:10 gap from 2-5.

Rio Rico fell to 5th place at Mt. SAC following an impressive home meet earlier in the week. Their top 4 ran respectively but the gap between their #4 and #5 was 34 seconds and in that time 37 other runners crossed the finish line. Rio Rico will have to improve that gap if they want to contend in the postseason.

Big School Girls: Eldorado 34 Academy 59 Belen 102 Rio Rancho 121 Cibola 135 (20 Complete Teams)

The Eldorado Eagles were without Julie Brasher who was taking an exam. The rest of the girls stepped up their performance. The 1-2-3 finish of the front runners was impressive. Allison Bedonie and Kristy Hannah batted with Belen’s Aleona Reyes for the entire race. Erin Madden also turned in an impressive performance finishing within 1:10 of Eldorado’s #1.

Academy was once again without Julia Foster (reigning 4A individual XC champ). But the true show was put on by the Throckmorton twins (who were one of 3 sets of talented twins running in the girls races at Rio Rancho). They have improved as the season has moved on and helped Clara Milne make Academy the favorite in the 4A division.

5A Region 4 Championship

Ft. Collins 17 Rocky Mountain 71 Monarch 89 Loveland 116 Poudre 119

At the Liberty Bell meet Tati Ogan was Fort Collin’s #3 and ran within 25 seconds of Miranda Benzel. This week she was 1:28 behind Benzel and the team’s #7 runner. But since the Liberty Bell meet Ft. Collins has seen some other girls improve. This team is solid and deep and is a heavy favorite to take home the first place trophy this weekend at the Colorado State Championships.

Thompson Valley 49 Greeley West 59 Greeley Central 81 Niwot 141 Broomfield 151 (15 Complete Teams)

A couple of weeks ago Greeley West was able to defeat Thompson Valley minus their superstar frontrunner Kendra Gerk. On Thursday Thompson Valley was able to come away with a 10 point victory over the “Gerkless” Greeley West squad. Gerk was suffering from a sore ankle and Greeley West coach Sue Carter state that she believed that she could of run but held her out to be conservative. If Gerk was inserted at the top of the race sheet the score would have been 44-54 in favor of Greeley West. This week’s 4A state championship will be a lot closer than most people believed a couple of weeks ago.

The girls from Davis came through in dominating fashion at the Utah State Championships. They dusted the competition by putting up a 47 margin on second place Skyline and by placing all of their runners in the top 40 (a feet no other team came close to accomplishing). This team has been solid all year and will be a true test for the other top teams in the Southwest region.

Last year the girls from O’Connor swept into Walnut and ran their way to the #2 ranking in the Southwest with a 4th place finish. This year’s squad is a little short on fire power compared to last year’s squad. But you can’t really blame the returning runners. Both Kailey Rumbo and Renee Peck improved by over 40 seconds from 2006 even if their places don’t show the improvement. Lindsay Presscott was only 4 seconds off of her 4th place performance from 2006 but this year her time was only good enough for 11th. The only returnee who ran slower was Jade Riley who clocked an 18:39 a year ago but has been hampered with injuries this season.
