Boys

SW#1/US#2 Albuquerque Academy, New Mexico

SW#9 Cibola, New Mexico

Albuquerque City Championship
10/6/07
Albuquerque Academy, Albuquerque, NM

Academy 26 Cibola 69 Sandia 87 Manzano 137 Hope 171 (13 Complete Teams)

For the second week in a row, the Academy Chargers were able to run on their home course. At this week’s Albuquerque City Championship the Red Army was about 5 seconds per man faster than the previous week. Academy continues to show incredible depth. A prime example was the performance of Anthony Lauriello who had been relegated to the JV following his disappointing performance at the Belen meet. But he stormed his way back onto the varsity with his performance a week ago and returned this week with a top 10 performance. Academy’s usual #3 Taylor Murray was also back in action. Last week he did not run and this week he ran on the JV. His winning time of 17:09 shows that he is healthy again. At the front of the pack we find the dominance of Ben Johnson whose 15:41 ranks #5 all time on the Academy course, which has hosted 40 invitational’s over the last 13 years.

Cibola was no match for Academy but they did show that they are the next best team in the Duke City and they may also be the best team in NM5A. Last week the Gallup Bengals, the perennial 5A power in New Mexico, ran on the same course and produces times that were almost identical to the times of the Cougars. The Bengals top 5 ran: 17:00—17:06—17:29—17:31—17:34. Scoring those times vs. Cibola on Saturday and the Cougars beat the Bengals 25-30. This give Cibola the midseason edge but the Bengals are notorious for running their best in November so nothing has been decided yet.

SW#3/US#15 Los Alamos, New Mexico

Santa Fe Indian School Invitational
10/6/07
Santa Fe, NM

Los Alamos 45 Los Lunas 75 St. Mike's 125 SFIS 129 Jemez Valley 137

The Hilltoppers were without 4 runners [Gareth Gilna (rest), Allen Pittman (SAT), Andrew Vierra (injury), Kevin Hemphill (migraine). Nat Gustafson (injury)] who have run on the varsity this year. Even without them Los Alamos was able to come away from the state capital with an impressive win. Another positive sign for LA was the continued improvement of Tom Witherell and Tom Bowidowicz who finished within 40 seconds of Kyle Pittman.

2. Kyle Pittman, Los Alamos 16:13
4. Tom Witherell, Los Alamos 16:39
7. Tom Bowidowicz, Los Alamos 16:52

No meet this week.

SW#5 Orem, Utah

Region 7 Championship
10/6/07

Timpview 51 Orem 52 Mountain View 54 Springville 101 Provo 106 Tooele 181 Payson 203

This was one of the few Regional contests that was run on the weekend. Since the Utah State Championship is held midweek many of the regions decide not to run their race on the weekend. Luckily for us we were given a preview with this loaded Region 7 Battle. Orem was upset for the second week in a row. This week it was Timpview that was able to squeek by with a 1 point win. Last week it was American Fork.

The Boys from Timpview have proven that they were down but not out. This race also proves that there is not much separating the top 4 teams in the state. And some people in Utah believe that you need to add Skyline to the conversation. As for this race Timpview was able to come out on top due to the strength of their pack. Their 40 second spread from 1-5 allowed them to run their #5 ahead of Orem’s #5 and Mountain View’s #4. Mountain View’s two front runners, who both finished ahead of Timpview’s and Orem’s #1 give them an advantage in a bigger meet and Mountain View’s #5 is within 10 seconds of both team’s #5s. Orem continues to run consistently. They have not seen a valley all year. This battle will be repeated in a week and a half at the state meet. I can’t wait!!

Girls

SW#1/US#2 Eldorado, New Mexico

++ Bubble Teams: Albuquerque Academy, NM; La Cueva, NM

Eldorado 33 Academy 60 La Cueva 95 Sandia 109 Cibola 135 (10 complete Teams)

Eldorado continues to dominate on the Academy course. Three of top 4 Eagles improved their times from a week ago. For the top 4 the average improvement was 19 seconds. There was a significant gap between their #4 and #5 who finished 17th. Albuquerque Academy was finally given the opportunity to show that their performance at UNM was not indicative of the type of team they are. They should now be considered the second best team in New Mexico and the favorite to dethrone Los Alamos in 4A.

Top 10 Individuals:
1. Rachel Velarde, Eldorado 19:07
2. Laura Lavezo, La Cueva 19:32
3. Allisone Bedonie, Eldorado 19:45

The girls from Thomson Valley were able to defeat in incomplete Fort Collins team this weekend at the Centerra Classic. Fort Collins was without the services of Miranda Benzel (usual #2), and Rachel Viger (#5 at Liberty Bell). In their absence Kelsey Follet had an impressive race finishing 8 seconds behind Kirsten Follett who has been the team’s #4. Thomspon Valley’s victory was still impressive as they beat Fort Collins through 5 and 4 runners.

SW#3 Greeley West, Colorado

Andy Myers Invitational
10/5/07
Greeley, CO

Greeley West 49 Greeley Central 67 Monarch 84 Longmont 141 Pueblo West 150 (13 Complete Teams)

Running without their usual #1, Kendra Gerk, the girls from Greeley West were able to come away with an 18 point victory in their home town. The girls may have been suffering a little bit of a letdown following their big win at Roy Griak but they still ran tough enough to come away with the big trophy.

No meet for the varsity this week.

SW#9 Mountain Ridge, Arizona

Queen Creek Invitational

Mountain Ridge 37 Sauguaro 72 Corona Del Sol 75 Highland 120 Gilbert 130 (20 Team Total)

Mountain Ridge ran impressively vs Saugauro who finished sixth at last week’s Conley invitational. Don’t pay much attention to the times of the Bishton twins. They ran behind Queen Creek’s Ashley Workman for the first half of the race and then opened up for the last half. But what you should pay attention to was the position of the next two runners for Mountain Ridge. They finished just in front of and behind Loren Wynn of Saguaro. At Conley, Wynn was 17th. With that comparison in place most believe that the Bishton’s would have run 1-2 and that baring a total breakdown, Nguyen and Radosevich would have run in the top 25 (they also both beat Hannah Morgan who finished 27th last week at Conley.) Mountain Ridge’s #5, Franki Catalina finished ahead of Catie Hutch and thus could have finished in the top 60 at Conley. She also finished ahead of Allie Harriot of Saguaro who finished 93rd. Catalina finished around runners who would have been #7 for the other top Arizona teams but never the less roughly speaking you could figure a score of around 103-125 based on comparison with Saguaro and Corona Del Sol. They look like the top team in Arizona, on paper, next week they get their chance to do their talking with their feet.

1. Bishton, Nadya 17:36
2. Bishton, Nastia 17:41
6. Nguyen, Nathalie 18:50
8. Radosevich, Katelin 19:02
20. Catania, Franki 19:57
28. Robinson, Natalie 20:11
29. Trent, Marina 20:11
