Boys Results - Girls Results
Boys Recap Three ranked teams (Academy, Los Alamos and Cibola) and a team with more tradition than any in New Mexico (Gallup) makes for one of the best battles in the Southwest in 2007. On paper it looked great. Live, it looked even better. The Los Alamos Course begins with a +-800m loop over relatively flat terrain. That section is followed by a large hill that takes the runners east toward the 1 mile mark. At the 800m mark, Los Alamos seemed to have the edge over the Red Army. At least that’s what Academy coach Adam Kedge believed as he remarked, “they look like they are ahead.” But runners who were overly aggressive over the first half mile paid for it later. And other runners, like Academy’s Kyle Cooper, who remained patient seemed to eat up harriers like PACMAN gobbles up pellets. By the halfway mark the race seemed to be a dead heat. As Ben Johnson was making short work of the field, the rest of the Red Army was moving on the Los Alamos pack but Allen and Kyle Pittman had pushed ahead of Academy’s #2 Pat Zacharias. Off in the distance Cooper and Eldorado’s Kevin Palmer were busy making up ground. Further back in the pack, another epic battle was taking place between 5A powerhouses Cibola and Gallup. Their two tight packs battled back and forth throughout the course as their two coaches motivated their runners with polar styles. Cibola’s Ken Henry was seen sprinting across the field yelling and challenging his runners in an aggressive style while Galen Martinez confidently pushed his Bengals in a more controlled manner. In the end the difference between the two teams was paper thin as Cibola edged Gallup by 4 on the shoulders of twins Vince and Chris Montoya. The last mile would be the deciding section for the Red Army. Kyle Cooper used his large smooth stride to move into the top 10 and just behind Zacharias. En route, he was able to pass Los Alamos’ #3 Gareth Gilna. Academy’s Anthony Lauriello and Ryan Clark were able to pull a similar move on Tom Bowidowicz (LA’s #4 who was in the top chase group earlier in the race.) With very small gaps between the runners we can expect that the 4A state championship will be another epic battle between these two squads. Los Alamos has come a long way from their 79 point loss to Academy at the UNM Invitational. But credit must also be given to the Chargers who have not skipped a beat on their journey this season.
Girls Recap
Eldorado’s secret was revealed Friday afternoon. Head Coach Jimmy Butler is a Superhero. He arrived in Los Alamos wearing his black and orange cape that was confidently labeled “Super Coach.” He tried to play it off by stating that it was his Halloween costume, but I know better. He has the power to motivate young girls to do the incredible. Ah but I know his weakness. If he is ever exposed to genuine New Mexico turquoise for an extended period of time he can lose his powers. But it is probably too late. His girls have received the gift of confidence and are clicking on all cylinders at the right time. In typical Eldorado style, the Eagle women were cautious over the initial 800 meters. Their top three (Rachel Velarde, Kristy Hannah and Allison Bedonie) were running smoothly in a pack joined by 3 Academy Chargers, a pair of Gallup Bengals and a single Cibola Cougar. The next group of runners was not very far behind. From the 800m mark to the mile was the major changing point in the race. Velarde picked up the pace as the course moved toward the biggest hill and spread out the pack. She would find herself alone for the remainder of the race. The chase group would contain Hannah, Bedonie and 2006 LA Invite Champ Jordan Brown. Those 3 never really saw a major challenge for the remainder of the race. Further back in the pack, the tides were changing for a couple of teams. The Academy Chargers, who were without their Clara Milne, were slowly moving backward while the Gallup Bengals were moving forward. This has been the direction the Bengals have been moving for the past couple of weeks. In the end Eldorado, minus Erin Maden, continued to prove their dominance by taking 4 of the top 7 spots.
