Indoor track and field returns to New Mexico

Bowlers Be Gone!! Following a 1 year hiatus indoor track and field is returning to the “Land of Enchantment.” The University of New Mexico is hosting 3 high school “All-Comers” meets and 1 Championship meet in 2009. The High School meets coincide with the university meets also hosted by UNM. The university meets will be contested in the morning with the High School meets being run from 6:00pm-9:00pm. The New Mexico Indoor season was cancelled in 2008 due to the scheduling of a Bowling tournament in January.
In 2007 the University of New Mexico hosted a handful of small All-Comers meets (that included high school and age division athletes) and one large invitational meet (which was high school only.) The later drew athletes from the southwestern US and California. This year’s contests will focus on New Mexico talent. The first 3 meets will be open invitationals and the final meet will include only the top 8 performers from the previous 3 meets. New Mexico is still a novice at indoor and because of that fact the athletes will face a more individualistic atmosphere compared to the “East Coast Indoor Scene.” The high school meets will only have individual events. New Mexico Activity Association rules do not allow team track contests until after the official start of the outdoor season (February 9). All of the athletes will compete as individuals and without school affiliation or uniforms.
