by Tony Bozarth

Torrential rains and thunderstorms delayed the start of the Centennial League by about 40 minutes, but two top-ranked Kansas squads put on a show once the rain stopped.  Manhattan's girls (#1 Class 6A, Heartland team-to-watch) and Emporia's boys (#1 Class 5A KS, Heartland team-to-watch, stomped through the mud and water to each convincingly win league titles.  Manhattan's girls put four runners into the top ten to score 35 points, with Seaman (Topeka) second with 73 and host Washburn Rural (Topeka) third with 102.  In a match-up of two of Kansas' best runners, Michaela Reynolds (Emporia) pulled away to a 15:05 4k win over Marley Crusch (Manhattan 15:19).  Kristin Strecker (Hayen, Topeka) was thirda 15:38, with Erica Test (Junction City fourth at 15:56) and Brooke Greiger (Manhattan, fifth at 15:59).

Emporia's boys stomped through the mud to put Jacob Davies (16:43 5k) and Asher Delmott (16:44) in first and second, and scored 30 points to win.  Manhattan was second with 57 points and Washburn Rural (Topeka) third with 80.  Brian Hagemann (16:47) and Jesse Perron (17:05) went three-four for Washburn Rural and Josh Lacer (Junction City 17:08) was fifth.
