Blue Valley Challenge - Great Bend Invitational - Smoky Valley Invite - Greg Wilson - Manhattan -

Greg Wilson Classic @ Johnson County Community College, Overland Park 9/2/06

The Greg Wilson Classic traditionally combines many of the top schools from both states of the Kansas City metro area, and 2006 meet continued that tradition on a perfect morning for running.

HL #3 Blue Springs MO (defending Missouri 4A champ) dominated the girls race early, putting all seven runners in the top eighteen, and scored 42 points to win from a determined effort from St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, 66). Shawnee Mission East was third with 93 points. Freshman Lisa Imgrund (Shawnee Mission Northwest) ran 15:52 for the rolling 4k to win, just edging Ashley Washburn (Aquinas 15:53). Kyra Kilwein (Free State, Lawrence) was third at 16:02, followed by Kelsey Long (Bishop Miege, Shawnee Mission 16:18) and Caitlin Laskowski (Blue Springs MO 16:18). Katie Wilbur (Aquinas 16:19), Alex Hawkins (Blue Springs 16:31), Morgan Hafner (Blue Springs 16:33), Lauren Renfro (Blue Springs 16:43) and Morgan Flannigan (Free State, Lawrence 16:52) rounded out the top ten.
The boys race offered an interesting contrast, as Blue Springs MO seemed to be running away with the title, putting four runners in the top nine. But careful observers noticed that Aquinas had packed very well and had a tighter spread to their fifth runner. In the end, Blue Springs scored 56 to hold off Aquinas' 58 to win the title. Defending KS 6A state champ Shawnee Mission Northwest appears to have it's re-building project in good shape after graduating most of it's varsity last year, placing third with 90 points.
Shawnee Mission Northwest made it a sweep of the individual titles, with Josh Weems pulling away late to a 16:26 win over 5k. Clay Martin of Blue Springs was second at 16:35, with Jimmy Ward (Shawnee Mission West) third at 16:42, holding off Gabe Moss (Free State, Lawrence 16:43) and Quinn Reilly (Aquinas 16:45). Brian Binkley (Blue Springs 16:47), Colin Coomer (Aquinas 16:52), Matt Stokes (Blue Springs 16:54), Phillip Hickman (Blue Springs 16:55), and Peter Reisz (Shawnee Mission East 16:59) completed the top ten.
The meet was re-named this year to honor Greg Wilson, the Aquinas coach who retired last spring after coaching cross country at the school for 18 years. Wilson, a latin teacher, is well known for his optimistic nature, and for attracting huge squads approaching 200 kids, won three state team titles at Aquinas.
