by Tony Bozarth

HL# 2 Potosi MO romps to 37 point total, (Previously ranked Blue Springs MO second with 162, HL #10 Aquinas sixth).  Olathe East KS girls win narrowly over  South #10 Bentonville AR with HL #10 Blue Springs MO fifth and HL #6 Lee's Summit West MO sixth.  Josh Mathis (Potosi MO 15:10) and Brittany Graff (Eudora 18:31 5k) win individual titles in four state/fifty team extravaganza.

Boys:  Josh Mathis  and Josh Thebeau gave Potosi an impressive 1-2 finish on a hot, windy day at the expanded Missouri Southern Stampede this year.  The weather was expected to slow times, with temps reaching the lower 90's and steady winds of 20-30 mph blew over the course.  Instead, an expanded field (perhaps due to KU's Rimrock Farm date being moved), simply ignored the heat and hammered away.  Mathis (15:10 5k) and Thebeau (15:30) established a clear lead by the mile and moved away over the rolling course, with Mathis looking very powerful in gapping his teammate at the beginning of the third mile.

Rick Elliot (Kickapoo, Springfield MO) closed very strongly to take third in 15:37, with Phillip King (Rock Bridge, Columbia MO 15:45) and Brad Jochems (Lee's Summit MO 16:01) completing the top five. Potosi's performance could only be classified as dominating, as Jacob Swearingon (6th 16:03), Daniel Forbes (8th, 16:10), Nick Niggeman (21st 16:42), Joe Skelton (44th 17:10) and Kelly Evans (72nd 17:37) completed Potosi's linedup.

Blue Springs won a tight battle for second with 162 points, just ahead of league rival Lee's Summit MO (168).  Lee's Summit West MO (205) and Lebanon MO (217) completed the top five teams.

Girls:  The name Kansas comes from a Native American word meaning "people of the south wind."  With the high temperatures and strong south winds today, maybe it was an omen, as Kansas girls took the top four individual places and the team title.    Olathe East KS (last year's 6A runnerup) and South #10 Bentonville AR dueled hard with a number of other teams in the mix early, including Eureka MO, Blue Springs MO, Lee's Summit West MO and Lebanon MO (showing great front end strength).  After the first three runners crossed the line, Bentonville held a narrow 38-51 edge, but East's reputation for pack running showed as the Kansan's piled in their next 4-5-6 runners ahead of Bentonville's fifth, with their # 7 just behind.   East scored 138 to Bentonville's 152.

Eureka MO was a close third with 169, with Lenbanon 188 fourth and HL rankers Blue Springs 192 and Lee's Summit West 206 next.   East's total came from Amanda Miller (4th 18:49 5k), Darci Miller (14th 19:42), Riley Wertenberger (36th 20:22), Casey Epps (38th 20:28), Lana Thompson (53rd 20:56), Kara Bartels (67th 21:10) and Kortney Schippers (72nd 21:17).

Individually, the race broke open at the mile as Kansan's  Amanda Miller (OE), Brittney Graff (Eudora), Michaela Reynolds (Emporia) and Ashley Washburn (Aquinas, Overland Park) were joined by Sara Vaughn (Union, Tulsa OK) with a large chase pack about 20 to 40 yards back.  The four Kansans traded the lead and hammered each as Vaughan fell back.  As the race moved into the switchback hills in the third mile Graff broke away to win in 18:31, with Reynolds second (18:37), Washburn third (18:40), Miller fourth (18:49) and Vaughan fifth (19:07).
