Unforgettable Performances at Watoma Relays

The 2008 Watoma Relays won’t soon be forgotten.

Good weather and standout athletes helped make Friday one of the most memorable days in the history of the meet, which opened in 1958 and is sponsored annually by the Watoma Club of Watertown.

Fourteen meet records, including two notable marks that had lasted 37 years, and one state record were broken.

“This is my 45th year of coaching and there have been a lot of great memories, but I don’t know if I’ve ever been to a meet where every time I turned around something big happened,” said Watertown High School head track coach Vic Godfrey. “It just never quit happening.

“I went into the locker room after the meet and saw some of the seniors talking about things. They were relishing the day they had. Twenty years from now at a class reunion, they’re going to talk about this meet. It wasn’t the state championship, but it was day of records and memories.” The most memorable record-setting performances came from Watertown seniors Aaron Jung and Leslie Brost and Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Bill Kogel. They were competing in the Class A division of the meet, which included nine schools. Eight area schools competed in the Class B events. A total of 14 meet records were broken.

Jung certainly left a lasting impression. He smashed the record in the Class A boys’ shot put with a heave of 65 feet, 3 inches, topping the mark of 60-3 set by Aberdeen’s Al Kirschman in 1971.

Jung, the defending state Class AA champion in the event, had a personal-best throw of 58-3 before this season. He already broke the school record with a toss of 61-10 at an indoor meet and was definitely primed to break the meet record.

The record toss came on his first throw in prelims and easily cleared the pit at Allen Mitchell Field, landing on the grass near a large group of spectators who were expecting something big. Jung delivered.

“That was my ultimate goal going into the season. Coach (Watertown weight coach Scott Leitheiser) told me he thought I could hit 65 feet,” said Jung. “I’ve hit it a few times in practice, actually even yesterday. Other people were breaking records and when that happens, it motivates you. Something clicked. I was feeling good in warmups and got my leg under me and it just went out there.”

Earlier in the day, Jung won the Class A boys’ discus with a throw of 162 feet and has his sights on Nathan Lamb’s school record of 179-5 in that event.

Godfrey said Jung’s record shot put is among the best all-time in the state, trailing only former Custer standout Eric Flores, who holds the state record at 67-4.5. It’s also among the top throws in the nation this spring.

“I watched Flores make that record throw at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays (2006) and then I followed him with a throw of 50 feet,” said Jung, who plans to compete in both football and track at Augustana College in Sioux Falls starting this fall. “Now I’m right up there with him and also one of the top guys in the country. That’s pretty cool when you think about it.”

Jung, an avid weight lifter who weighs 250 pounds, certainly is excited about the possibility that even bigger things might be forthcoming as the 2008 season progresses. He admitted it was hard to top his first throw Friday.

“That’s just how the shot put works,” he said. “You hit one and sometimes you get out of control a little bit. To be honest, I was pretty overwhelmed with what I hit that first throw. It was kind of hard getting back down to reality.”

Jung shared the outstanding athlete honor in the Class A boys’ division with Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Bill Kogel, who snapped another of the longest-standing Watoma Relays records Friday. Kogel won the Class A boys’ 1,600-meter run in 4:18.3, topping the mark of 4:21.2 set by Madison’s Jeff Schemmel, also in 1971. Schemmel is one of the most notable distance runners in state history.

Brost’s performance also shouldn’t be overlooked. She broke her own meet and state record by clearing 13-3 in the Class A girls’ pole vault, also one of the top vaults this year in the country. Her previous state record was 13-0.

“There were some great athletes in 1971, some of the best in state history,” said Godfrey. “There are records and then there are records. We had the 65-foot shot put, the 13-3 pole vault and others. Those are the kinds of things that attract attention all around the country.”

Here’s a breakdown of top results by division:

Class A Boys
Jung and Kogel were part of six records set in this division, including two others by Watertown seniors Keith Newman and Brad Monahan.
Newman won the 300 hurdles in 40.43 seconds and Monahan, the defending state Class AA champion, eclipsed his own meet record with a leap of 46 feet, 8.25 inches in the triple jump.
Brookings sprinter Evan Bunkers now owns two meet records, winning the 200 in 22.07 seconds and the 400 in 51.06.
Watertown athletes won six of the 18 events. Senior Jesse Morrow repeated as the pole vault champion, clearing 14 feet and joined Newman and fellow seniors Nathan Rogness and Alex Kjellsen in winning the 1,600 relay.
Kjellsen got the relay win for Watertown with a strong anchor leg, helping the Arrows edge Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Roosevelt at the tape.
“I just told somebody that I’m maybe going to take one event or one performance from today and savor it for a day and then take another one and savor it the next day,” Godfrey said.

Class A Girls
Brost didn’t stop with the pole-vault record and earned the outstanding athlete award in the division. She also won the triple jump (35-3) and ran on the Arrows’ winning 1,600 (4:07.94) and medley (4:19.92) relay teams.
Fellow seniors Kalie Cox and Brittany Page also had record-setting performances. Cox broke her own meet record in the 300 hurdles (46.83 seconds) and Page did the same in the 200 (25.22).
Page also won the 100 dash for the fifth straight year and also ran on the winning 1,600 and medley relays. Despite getting four firsts, she wasn’t able to garner the outstanding athlete award for the fourth straight year.
Watertown won eight events, also getting a victory from junior Abby Winkels in the high jump (5-1). Junior Taylor Kellogg and eighth grader Tia Hemiller also ran on both of the Arrows’ winning relay teams.
Chandler Neilsen of Sioux Falls O’Gorman eclipsed the meet record in the 400 dash (59.13 seconds) and Katie Johnson of Fargo North swept the shot put and discus.

Class B Boys
Drew Allen of Castlewood collected three firsts and a second-place finish on the way to being named the outstanding athlete in the division.
Allen took the 100 hurdles (16.06 seconds) and 300 hurdles (43.77 seconds) and also tied for first in the 100 dash (11.73 seconds). He was second in the long jump (19-1).
Landon Leiseth of Hamlin had the only meet record in the division, winning the 800 run in 2:07.16. He also won the 1,600 in 4:53.12.
Other notable performances were provided by Waverly-South Shore’s Kyle Thyen, who tied for first with Allen in the 100 dash and also won the 200 dash (23.61); Great Plains Lutheran’s Scott Geary, who won the discus (145-3) and shot put (46-1); Great Plains Lutheran’s Jacob Steinmetz, who won the 400 dash (52.92) and long jump (19-3) and Hamlin’s Josh Monson, who won the triple jump (38-10.5) and also anchored Hamlin’s winning medley relay.
Arlington’s boys won the other three relays - 400, 800 and 1,600.

Class B Girls
Ashley Gruenwald earned outstanding athlete honors in the division with four first-place finishes and two individual records.
She set meet records in the 200 (26.97 seconds) and 400 dashes (1:00.6) and also ran on Clark’s winning 800 and 1,600 relays.
Teammates Caitlyn Bjerke and Heather Borns joined Gruenwald on the 800 and 1,600 relays and also ran on the winning medley relay for the Comets.
Hamlin’s Larae Zimprich also set a record, taking the 300 hurdles in 51.64 seconds.
