DyeStat XC Region Review MW
Summary of Midwest Top Ten, Week Ending Nov. 3, 2007
By Jeff Hollobaugh, Dyestat MW Regional Editor
As much fun as we all have with rankings, we all know that the championship meets are where the rankings end and the racing begins. We see which coaches are adept at peaking their teams, and we also see the unforeseen happen. Injuries, illness, and bad luck can strike any program. One Michigan ranker told me this weekend, "I've been doing rankings for 27 years, and I consider myself lucky if I can predict five or six of the top 10 at the state finals."
A few major surprises came out of the state meets in the Midwest this week. Foremost among them was the performance of unranked Broadview Heights, taking the Ohio girls title over #3 Magnificat. Or the big meet performance of the York boys, beating two teams that had been ranked above them.
Just as often, the rankings are dead-on. Neuqua Valley performed brilliantly at the Illinois meet, and the Pinckney boys overcame illness to win their third straight Michigan title. Then there were the Geneva (IL) girls, all of them ninth-graders, who proved that experience is not always required to win. Said #2 runner Liza Tauscher, "We got down here and thought there was a pretty good chance at a state title, and if we didn't get it, it wouldn't be the end of the world.''
