Michigan Regionals Highlights

May 18-19, 2007 MI

by Jeff Hollobaugh

Highlights: Boys - Girls

At the Warren Regional, Shayla Mahan clocked an 11.0 hand time for the 100, a mark that could well have been a all-time state record if it had been automatically timed, and if officials had used wind gauges. Ann Arbor Pioneer's Chidimma Uche clocked 42.1 in the 300 hurdles at her regional meet in Saline, a mark that surely would have been an all-time state record had it been automatically timed.

However, since the MHSAA does its state meet qualification and seeding with no allowance for the fact that inaccurate hand times are faster than FAT times, no regional in the state uses automatic timing. Some see this as another opportunity lost for good publicity for the sport. And this one is particularly frustrating, since it would take just minutes for the state to come up with a qualification policy that would open the door to FAT timing at regionals. In the meantime, we're left wondering how fast Mahan and Uche really ran.
