| Pioneer boys, Rockford girls nail D1 titles
They’re the best – for now. But coaches Don Sleeman and Ben Watson know how tenuous the hold on #1 is. You’re thankful for the win, you’re thankful for the day, but you take nothing for granted in the future – knowing that you might be only a few injuries or sick runners away from being #2, or even an also-ran. - US#35/MW#6 Ann Arbor Pioneer's boys, in their first meeting with Michigan D1#2 and MW bubble team Pinckney, used an individual triumph from Nathan Karr (15:24.9 5k) and the typical depth of its 7 seniors in putting together a decisive win in the D1 race. They scored 72 in the 41-team field, 46 more than Pinckney (118). Pinckney, in turn, topped Huntington North IN by 58 for 2nd
- Karr, the Pioneer senior who led Pioneer's 2008 D1 state title effort, finishing 8th (2nd non-senior), used a tremendous kick in the last 300 to pull away from Monroe jr Austin Whitelaw (15:34.4) and Kenowa Hills sr Reed Kamyszek (last year's D2 champ, now in D1 - 15:39.1. Bedford jr Nick Kaiser, last spring's surprise 800 runner-up who is getting better and better in XC, was 4th in 15:45.8
- Rockford, ranked 3rd in MI D1, had an outstanding race from just about everyone (19:08 avg) and won the 39-team D1 race with 108. Sophs Jane Hawks (18:46) and Taylor Manett (18:48) led the way in 9th and 11th. MW bubble team and MI D1#4 Pinckney was a strong 2nd with 124, while MW bubble team and MI D1#1 Saline - the big Spartan Invite champ - didn't show its usual depth and was 4th with 172. Defending Portage and D1 state champ Traverse City Central was 3rd with 167
- Saline was super at the top, however, as senior Alex Leptich - a star since her frosh year who's struggled to get to the next level - won the biggest race of her career with a PR 17:57. Senior teammate Kate Carter was 4th in 18:22. Finishing in-between were Hartland frosh Avery Evenson (18:08.9) and East Kentwood sr Alissa Williams (18:19.3)
