Highlights:
Boys

  • Southlake Carroll jr Colby Lowe was content to set the 5A 3200 pace this morning , then dropped the hammer with a 59.9 final 400, breaking the tape in 8:59.79, his first sub 9:00. The 2-time Foot Locker finalist has not lost a race (track or XC) in Texas since last year’s state 1600 bronze, and will be looking for “redemption” in tonight’s 4-lapper. Woodlands sr Alex Neff gamely followed his lead until the final lap, and earned silver in 9:06.22.
  • Rowlett soph Marquise Goodwin, 7th last year, sailed US#1 25-0 (+0.9) for long jump gold, just 2.25 inches off the national sophomore class record
  • Tatum sr Denarius Moore clocked US#3 13.69 (+0.6) for the 2A 110 hurdle title, after taking class 3A last year. Later he added the 300 crown in 36.99.
  • Skywater sr Skye Green jetted down the straightaway in 10.49 (+0.2) for 3A 100 honors, moving up 2 spots from 2006, and edging defending champ Madison sr Shawbrey McNeal in 10.53
  • Cedar Hill sr Tyron Stewart finally nailed a triple jump in a meet with a wind gauge, bounding 50-9.5 (+0.2) for US#1 wind-legal in 5A action
  • Clear Brook sr Maston Wallace, the current US#2 at 17-1, topped 16-6 for 5A gold before trying a new pole for three unsuccessful attempts at an outdoor 17-2 PR
  • Mansfield sr Grant Lindsey, the current US#2 high jumper at 7-3, needed “only” 6-11 to claim the 5A title today
  • With 3 of the top 5 4x100 teams in the US coming in, this was destined to be a great 5A battle. And that’s how it played out, as Klein Forest grabbed gold and US#1 in 40.56, just inches ahead of Hightower in 40.57. The three medalists all dipped under the old US#1, with the top 5 under 41 seconds.
  • Skyline soph Howard Shepard was unknown to the vast majority of Texans last year, as he sat out the high school varsity season before going on to national Junior Olympic victories during July in 1:52.25 (#2 all-time US freshman) and 1:52.81. Today he made a name for himself in Texas, and it’s Mr. 800 as he clocked 1:51.31 for the 5A crown.
  • In the 5A 110 hurdles, Carter sr Oscar Spurlock was a repeat winner with a 13.73 into a slight headwind
  • All eyes were on the 100 as the gun sounded, specifically lane 8 which held Stevens soph Rynell Parson, the favorite as the incoming US#1. Just 10.37 seconds later, the young star had his 1st state title, a mere 0.05 off his US leader.
  • Fireworks were expected in the 4x200, as the field included the 4 fastest schools in the US. And as the teams streamed across the finish line in rapid succession (boom-boom-boom-boom) and then the smoke cleared, it was Hightower on top in 1:23.92, a new national federation record and #3 on the comprehensive all-time list. In fact, the top 3 teams (Garland 1:24.03, Klein Forest 1:24.08) were under the old federation record of 1:24.10, set just last year by Eisenhower in this very meet.
  • Keller Central sr Danzell Fortson and North Crowley sr Marcus Boyd were neck-and-neck down the homestretch in the 5A 400, with Fortson narrowly claiming gold, 46.76 to 46.81.
  • Sterling sr John Matthews powered home in US#4 36.34 for 5A 300 hurdles honors
  • In the 5A 200, defending champ Austin sr Mychal Dungey did not go quietly, in spite of all the attention focused on Rynell Parson and his loss to Parson at regionals by the narrowest of margins, 0.01. Dungey stayed close on the curve and then powered down the homestretch, easing away from Parson 21.06 to 21.19, into a slight headwind.
  • Southlake Carroll jr Colby Lowe had dipped under the 9-minute barrier in the 3200 for the 1st time earlier today. Fittingly enough, he joined the sub-4:10 club in tonight’s 5A 1600, running 4:09.28, with soph teammate CJ Brown staying close for silver in 4:12.86.
  • DeSoto came into the 5A 4x400 with a US#2 3:11.67 season best, and nearly matched that with a 3:11.83 winner. Cedar Hill came from way back to challenge on the anchor leg by sr Romie Blaylock, falling short in 3:12.96, but vaulting into a tie with Klein Forest for team silver. Hightower captured the team title with 51 points, an 11-point margin of victory.

Girls
  • Cy Creek sr Allison Pye pushed the second half of the 5A 3200, and was an easy winner in 10:48.98. Kingwood jr Kristen Hanselka, the only other entrant under 10:50 coming in, stayed in the chase pack before kicking home the final straight in 10:59.52.
  • In a great 2A discus matchup, Colorado City sr Paige Newby, the US#10 returnee, flung the sphere 154-5, holding off a challenge from Cisco sr Stormy Harrison, 148-2
  • Mansfield soph Shade Weygandt cleared 13-7 to successfully defend her 5A pole vault title. That’s a new national sophomore class record, to go along with her freshman outdoor and soph indoor records.
  • DeSoto soph Skylar White improved her prior US#4 to 158-4 in the 5A discus throw
  • US#4 40-10.5 triple jump in 5A by Eastwood jr Jessica Ubanyionwu, as Warren jr Kia Wansley (40-8.25w) and Bell jr Eld-hah Kaswatuka (40-0.25, +1.3w) also exceeded the 40-ft barrier
  • The anticipated 5A clash between the US#1 and =US#2 high jumpers lived up to the hype. Midland jr Victoria Lucas, who had made US#2 5-10 four times this season, came up big with a 6-1 clearance (#21 all-time performer), while previous #1 Marshall sr Brittani Carter also PR-ed at 6-0 for silver.
  • Skyline’s 4x100 foursome sped 46.12 US#2, with the top six 5A teams under 47 seconds, including A&M Consolidated at 46.23, just 0.06 off its prior US#2
  • Lake Highlands sr Angelina Williams was the top seed in the 800 off her 5A regional performance, and true to form clocked a PR 2:11.72 for the title
  • Humble sr Karyn LaCour successfully defended her 5A 100 hurdles championship, posting a US top 10 time of 13.70 (+1.2)
  • The 5A 4x200 line-up included the #1, #2 and #5 fastest squads in the nation, and promised to be one of the deepest girl’s race of the evening. Sure enough, Timberview lived up to expectations, improving its US#1 to 1:36.37 which is #15 on the US all-time list. Next was Skyline with a US#2 1:36.93 (#30 all-time), followed by Bowie (Arlington) in 1:37.58, just 0.01 off its season best, now US#3.
  • Clear Brook jr Erica Alexander won the 100 last year, but looking for a new challenge, opted for the 200-400 double this year. First up was the 400, and she was out quickly and remained strong down the stretch, breaking the tape in US#1 53.29. Irving sr Kristal Juarez nipped Cy Fair sr Brittany Machacek for silver, 54.00 to 54.04, both US top ten times. Then after just 30 minutes recovery, Alexander toed the line in the 200, and again came out on top in 24.12.
  • With just the 4x400 remaining, DeSoto was within striking range in the overall team title chase, 6 points behind Skyline and 1 back of Timberview, which did not have a 4x400 squad. And that was close enough, as De Soto cruised US#5 3:44.23 for 20 big points, followed by Cedar Hill in US#7 3:45.06 and Skyline 3rd in 3:46.69 for 12 points, an 8-point swing in DeSoto’s favor.
