Big-school titles to Cedar Park boys, SL Carroll girls

Highlights
  • US#4 Cedar Park boys, with 5A state 3200 and USATF Jr 10k champ Parker Stinson anchoring, won the Boys 5A-4A 6-mile relay in 30:11.  Stinson was joined by brothers Jay and Bob McIllece, and Austin Geerts, on the relay.  2nd in 5A-4A was Southlake Carroll in 31:26, followed by Cedar Park's 2nd quartet in 31:40, McKinney Boyd in 31:41, and Justin Northwest in 32:48.
  • Southlake Carroll girls, 3rd in the 5A state meet last year, ruled the girls 5A-4A battle with a time of 37:36, almost a minute ahead of Coppell's 38:29.  A tight battle for the runner-up spot saw Canyon (38:31) and Highland Park (38:35) close behind.  The winners were led by Paige Youngblood, Sarah Roe, and sisters Jessica and Rachel Harper.
  • Vandegrift edged Liberty Christian for the 3A boys title, 32:47 to 32:50, thanks to the efforts of Brandon Keys, Topher Jensen, Connor Thomas and J.R. Hardy.
  • Leander Rouse took the girls 3A race over Holiday, 40:07 to 40:22, paced by the running of Naab, Alyssa Amirault, Amri Castenada, and Nicole Kastens.  2008 NXN champion Chelsey Sveinsson, running for host and 9th place Greenhill (42:33), was thought to have had the fastest leg of the day for 1.5 miles in an unofficial 8:20
  • The boys JV "A" race was won by Southlake Carroll (34:07), while the winner of the other boys JV race was unidentified.  Both of the girls JV titles went to teams from Southlake Carroll (38:53 and 40:28).

Meet Preview

It’s only days before the running of the 25th annual Greenhill / Luke’s Locker 6 Mile Relay race on August 29, 2009 at Norbuck Park in Dallas, Texas. This year’s silver anniversary promises to be as competitive of a meet as ever. Entry forms are steadily coming in, but this is what the meet looks like so far:
  • Chelsey Sveinsson, the 2008 NXN cross-country champ and 2009 NON 1M/2M winner on the track, will lead the Greenhill School’s girls team as they try to defend their 3A-and-under team title
  • Highland Park may very well be the team to beat in the girls 5A/4A race. Coached by legendary Jerry Sutterfield, the Scots always seem to run well over the hay bales and hills that define the 6 Mile Relay. Sara Sutherland, Jenna Read, and Caroline Cartwright return from last year’s runner up team which finished behind the Southlake Carroll Dragons.
  • The Cedar Park teams are making the trek up to Dallas from the Austin area, with the boys hoping to defend their 5A/4A title. The boys will be led by U.S. Junior 10,000 (31:18) meter champion and UIL 3,200 meter (8:54) champion Parker Stinson. Coach Timo Sheard will be looking to find three other runners to join Stinson and as defending team champions, they will be easy to spot on the race course in their Asics yellow singlets. Cedar Park will also be aiming to make a statement that their recent #4 national ranking in The Harrier’s pre-season poll is legitimate.
  • Both Southlake Carroll and Mesquite Poteet, the #2 and #3 finishing squads in last year’s relay, will look to be in the top five again. Southlake Carroll will be without the services of recent graduate and national caliber runner C.J. Brown. Poteet, with two returning members from last year’s quartet, should be strong.
  • Greenhill School’s boys team will be defending their 3A-and-under team title and has a young team this fall. Eustace and Wills Point, two long time contenders, will look to set the pace.
  • Norman High School of Oklahoma will be crossing the Red River to take on some of the best teams in Texas.
Additional action on the side includes:
  • Celebrating ten successful years of sponsorship from Luke’s Locker and Asics.
  • The return of the meet’s founder, Tom Holodak, to Dallas from his current work as Athletic Director at Augusta (GA) Prep Academy.
  • Customized watches to the top four person teams and their coach in all eight races.
