1. The Woodlands TX (US#7)
2. Rogers AR (US#20)
3. Georgetown TX
4. Southlake Carroll TX (US#24)
5. Cedar Park TX
8. Seven Lakes TX

The Nike South Invite was loaded this week, with 6 current and 3 previously ranked teams, plus a few bubble teams. Cedar Park was in command during the race, but as its lead runner started to falter in the last mile, Rogers was coming on strong. It ended up very close, with a narrow 1-point raw score lead for Rogers. When the final scores were tallied, Cedar Park claimed a hard-fought victory with 92 points, averaging 16:34.1, ahead of Rogers with 96 and a 16:34.8 average for a well-deserved silver. The Woodlands got another strong effort from jr Reed Connor in 5th, but its pack was further back than it had been in earlier meets, and they ended up 3rd with 124 and a 16:39 average. Southlake Carroll got the expected 1-2 finish by sr Colby Lowe (15:16) and jr C.J. Brown (15:34) to place 4th with 159, followed by Georgetown with 163 and Seven Lakes with 192 to round out the top 6 - all the ranked teams. A big eye-opener was Marcus freshman Craig Lutz, 3rd overall in 15:45.

Cedar Park coach Timo Sheard said, “It feels great. Our focus is to just make it to state, our region is tough. We’re treading in new water here, and have a young team. Our top four ran strong, but our #5 (jr Chris Galvin) wasn’t even on the team last year, he was a swimmer, and he just keeps moving up.”

Rogers coach Carlton Efurd said, “We were probably in 4th at the 2-mile mark, but ran a great last mile. I was real proud of the way we never quit.”

10. Brother Martin LA
the #1 team in Louisiana, finished 2nd and nipped state #2 Jesuit LA 114-115 at the Memphis Twilight Invite, with the 5th man being key as Br Martin won that spot 24-26. Daviess County KY boys captured the team title with 107 points, and averaged 16:38 for 5k. Brother Martin averaged 16:42 and Jesuit 16:41. Brentwood sr Sean Keveren, a Foot Locker favorite (link), earned individual honors in 15:13.48, while Tupelo MS soph Max Holman took the bronze in 15:55.15.

Coach Ryan Gallagher said, “We weren't as sharp as we've been the past couple of races, but this race was a different kind of challenge than we've seen, and I thought our men handled it well. It was a good "big-meet" experience for us. We were disappointed that we didn't take the team title, and I know our 5th and 6th were not happy with how they ran, but I was pleased with our competitive attitude. I thought we showed some character in our ability to pick up some valuable points in the last 1200 meters or so. We definitely have a lot of room for improvement in the next month, and we're just looking to get better and stay focused each week.”

GIRLS
1. Keller TX (US#8)
2. Cinco Ranch TX

The three top girls teams at the McNeil Invite opted to run the shorter 3200-meter 4A-5A Varsity race, looking to get some experience on the actual state meet course. Cinco Ranch struck gold, scoring 102 points with a 12:26.0 average, even without 2 probable scorers. South bubble team Houston Memorial earned silver with 116 and averaged 12:25.0. US#8 Keller, without its usual #4 and lacking depth, took the bronze with 129 and a 12:25.2 average. Vista Ridge soph Ashley Isham broke the tape in 11:31.

Cinco Ranch coach Kristi Robbins said, “We wanted to get experience on this course. I told the team to pretend like it’s the state meet, prepare as if it is, and get out hard the first 300. The meet was very well-run, but it was difficult with over 350 girls in the race. We were limited to 2 runners on the actual starting line.”

The Nike South Invite had 5 ranked teams in the Elite 5k race. Kingwood, a deep and experienced squad, captured the team title with 63 points, averaging 19:31. The Woodlands, with a 4th-place showing at the Stanford Invite in California last week, was next with 118 and a 19:56 average, ahead of Southlake Carroll’s 120 and 19:58 average. Cy-Woods (Cypress Woods), a new school that opened just last year, was an impressive 4th with 145 pints and a 20:16 average. Hereford, the 2006 4A state champ, but missing its expected #2, was 5th with 158 and a 20:17 average.

Brazoswood jr Lauren Smith clocked 18:18, just off her winning time from last year under much cooler conditions, which confirmed that she will be a contender for state gold and a Foot Locker berth. Alvin sr Brittainy Robertson took silver in 18:27, and Kingwood sr Kirsten Hanselka the bronze in 18:32.

Kingwood coach Christie Burleson said, “We competed well, and made a lot of movement during the race. We’ve been back and forth with The Woodlands this season, but our sophomore Rose Steup and freshman Valerie Logan really stepped it up today and made a difference.”

Next: Kingwood and Woodlands at College Park, Hereford at Chile Pepper (AR), Ursuline at Lewisville, Southlake Carroll scheduled for Chile Pepper, but may rest instead

Next: College Park

7. Clear Lake TX
chose to run the non-elite race at Nike South, and claimed the top 2 team spots in the shorter 3370-meter race. The team was missing 2 of its top 7 today.

Coach James Menze said, “Overall, I was very pleased with our performance. Brittney Wade has established herself as a true front runner, which is something we have been lacking. Her time is only 8 seconds slower than what Nichole Jones (state champ & Foot Locker finalist) ran on the same course a few years ago. We ran the shorter race for two reasons. First, we have such a tight squad from 5-12 that on any given day we may have a different top 7, so this gave us a chance to see them compete together. Finally, I don't think a 5k this late in the season would be beneficial to our team.”
