2007 Virginia Tech Invitational

Rector Fieldhouse, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg VA

January 26-27, 2007

Friday Highlights

The US #1's

Trenton Guy Jr. - 6.30 55m - US #1

West  Charlotte NC's Trenton Guy Jr. already owned the nation's fastest time for 55 meters at 6.31 coming into Virginia Tech and did not wait till Saturday's finals to better his time as he clocked a new US #1 time of 6.30 in Friday's prelims.

Westfield VA girls - 9:19.55 4x800 - US #1

Westfield VA 4x800: Emani Ban (so), Tasia Potasinski (jr), Kerry Hartman (jr), Brittany Sevachko (jr)

The Westfield VA girls returned all four members from last year's 9:14 outdoor team with three 2:15 800 meter girls back including opening leg at Tech pictured above Brittany Sevachko.  Kerry Hartman opened a lead for the Westfield girls on second leg.

However, Eleanor Roosevelt MD showed their amazing depth competing with a completely different set of runners from their 12:03 DMR less than an hour before and Jameson rallied them into the lead in the final exchange.  Tasia Potasinski was able to run down ER's anchor leg and give Westfield the win and the nation's fastest time at 9:19.55. Eleanor Roosevelt took second in 9:27.60

 Peter Dorrell - 9:10.76 - US #1

From right to left: 2006 Footlocker finalists Mike Spooner of West Springfield VA and Griff Graves of Abingdon VA share the start line with Mount Tabor NC's Greg Dame and Blacksburg VA's Peter Dorrell.

Spooner, Graves, and Dorrell separated themselves early on from the rest of the field with Spooner doing much of the pace work as they rolled through the first 1600 meters in 4:35.  Graves took the lead from Spooner, but his spot up front would be short lived for only one lap.

Dorrell made an aggressive move in the last 800 meters that the two Footlocker finalists simply could not cover.  After running a personal best last weeked at Liberty U. with a winning time of 9:23, Blacksburg junior Dorrell chopped another 13 seconds off at VT to cross the line first in a US #1 time of 9:10.76.

Spooner finishes in second at 9:18.46 with Dorrell catching his breath in the foreground.  Graves rounds out a fast top three at Tech in 9:24.38.
