DyeStat XC Region Review SE
Summary of Southeast Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 15, 2007
By Brett Honeycutt, Dyestat SE Regional Editor
Boys - Girls
BOYS
1. OAKTON (VA) No let down from last weekend when they beat three SE ranked teams as they dominated the Lake Forest Invitational at Killens Pond State Park in Delaware, despite "training through" the meet.
On a sandy, narrow course, Oakton put six in the top 11, averaged 16:22.9 per runner (one of the fastest in the 50-year history of the meet) and won by 67 points (24-91) against second-place Caesar Rodney (runner-up at Delaware's Division I state meet last year). Caesar Rodney averaged 17:04 per runner.
In all, Oakton beat 13 of top 14 teams from last year's Delaware Division I state meet (only team not running was last year's No. 13 William Penn). Rounding out the top five: St. Mark's (105 points, 17:10 avg., No. 4 in Division I last year); Charter (107 points, 17:10 avg., No. 3 in Division I last year) and Salesianum (112 points, 17:17 avg., No. 1 in Division I last year).
2 LoRusso, Joe Oakton 16:17.31 4 Hendricks, Brian Oakton 16:19.38 5 Hendricks, Neal Oakton 16:19.95 6 Weil, Chris Oakton 16:28.22 7 McCullen, Andrew Oakton 16:29.23 11 Maxfield, Scott Oakton 16:43.95 27 Fulghum, Patrick Oakton 17:24.51
Next meets: Wednesday, Sept. 19, District Teams at Burke Lake; Saturday, Sept. 22, None.
2. QUINCE ORCHARD (MD) Ran two low-key meets this week as the team takes time to focus on smaller meets and bring the back of the pack along in preparation for the Paul Short Invitational at the end of the month. Several runners used it as a workout.
On Saturday, with 70-degree weather, against Northwest, Churchill and Sherwood, they sat out No. 3 runner Josh Joson and still won easily in a meet that was scored as a dual against each school (17-38 was the score against all three schools).
1. Darmody, Neal 16:35 2. Larattta, David 17:02 3. Panasenkov, Artem 17:12 9. Lasko, Kris 17:41 10. Migdall, Mike 17:44
On Tuesday at Whitman, the weather was warm but comfortable and Quince Orchard won easily by placing seven in the top eight to win 19-44 (Whitman sat out No. 1 runner, but, obviously, it wouldn't have made much of a difference). 1. Darmody, Neal 16:35 3. Joson, Josh 17:13 4. Panasenkov, Artem 17:31 (sick) 5. Laratta, David 17:37 (sick) 6. Migdall, Mike 17:43 7. Priovolos, Ryan 17:47 8. Lasko, Kris 17:59
Next meets: Wednesday, Sept. 19, vs. Richard Montgomery at Smokey GlenFarm.
3. WESTERN ALBEMARLE (VA) Finished third to Broughton, NC and Enloe, NC at the Adidas Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh at SAS Soccer Complex (a former Great American course). Broughton averaged 16:48 per runner and scored 64 points, Enloe averaged 16:49 and scored 77 and Western Albemarle averaged 16:47 and scored 79. Tyler Stutzman and Kyle Satterwhite went 16:07 (third) and 16:09 (fourth) respectively, which is why Western Albemarle had a better average than Broughton and Enloe, but a 27th and 29th by Western Albemarle's fourth and fifth runners hurt.
3 Stutzman, Tyler Western Albemarle 5:11 16:07.00 4 Satterwhite, Kyle Western Albemarle 5:11 16:09.00 16 1656 Howard-Smith, James Western Albemarle 5:27 16:56.00 27 Loehr, Henry Western Albemarle 5:35 17:21.00 29 Gomez, Carlos Western Albemarle 5:35 17:23.00 32 Fickley, Andrew Western Albemarle 17:26.00 32 33 Dubovsky, Kevin Western Albemarle 17:30.00 35 1660 Sitler, Adrian Western Albemarle 5:38 17:31.00
Next meets: Wednesday, Sept. 19, Fluvanna County High; Sept. 22, None.
4. JAMESTOWN (VA) Competed in a local tri meet against Poquoson and Smithfield.
Next meet: Saturday, Sept. 22, William & Mary Invitational.
5. MOUNTAIN VIEW (VA) At Saturday's Brentsville Relays, where five runners on each team runs 2,500 meters and passes a baton to the next runner, Mountain View was second to SE No. 6 Midlothian, 38:56 to 39:15. Ocean Lakes was third in 39:18, Brentsville fourth in 39:35 and Douglas Freeman fifth in 39:40. Midlothian's time was a course record by 7 seconds.
Thomas Porter was Mountain View's fastest split in 7:26.
The meet is considered low-key and fun by some coaches, so it's difficult to gauge what the results would have been like in a regular 5K.
Next meets: Tuesday, Sept. 18, All Commonwealth Teams; Saturday, Sept. 22, Embry-Riddle Invitational.
6. MIDLOTHIAN (VA) At Saturday's Brentsville Relays, where five runners on each team runs 2,500 meters and passes a baton to the next runner, Midlothian beat SE No. 5 Mountain View (38:56 to 3:15), returning the favor of the loss last week at Great Meadows. Midlothian's time broke the course record of 39:03 set by Brentsville.
Jason Witt was Midlothian's fastest split in 7:27.
The meet is considered low-key and fun by some coaches, so it's difficult to gauge what the results would have been like in a regular 5K.
Next meet: Sept. 22, None
7. OAK RIDGE (TN) No meet for Oak Ridge (TN) this weekend. Season really begins next week at the tough McCallie Invitational, where three SE Regional teams will be competing (Oak Ridge, No. 9 Hoover, AL and No. 9 Baylor, TN).
Next meet: Sept. 22, McCallie Invitational
8. WALTON (GA) At Saturday's Double Dip Invitational at Marist, finished second, 84-112, to SE Region bubble team South Forsyth. Rain from the night before made the ground wet, and likely slower than in years past. The first mile of the course is flat and the second mile has two hard hills, back to back, with the last mile flat, but with a lot of turns.
Because of a mistake by course guides, the top 29 finishers didn't complete the last half mile of the course. As a result, Walton's top five covered only 2.6 miles of the 5k course. When the mistake was realized, the remainder of the varsity boys runners were directed to run the final loop and were able to finish the 5k distance. Meet officials decided not to DQ anyone, though.
Adam Joseph-11 14:58 (2.6 miles) Jeremy Schmid-12 14:59 (2.6 miles) Nathan Gordon-12 15:00 (2.6 miles) Josh Walling-12 15:01 (2.6 miles) Chris Harper-12 15:11 (2.6 miles) Abhi Ramesh-1018:48 full 5k Charlie Moore-12 18:5 full 5k
Next meet: Sept. 22, Georgia Stampede (two of top 7 will not compete)
9. HOOVER (AL) Despite being without No. 4 runner Ben Willis (injury) for another week, Hoover won the 11-team Panther Invitational at Smith's Station on Saturday, easily beating host Smith's Station, 36-61. Hoover placed four in the top 13 and six in the top 20 (five came in before anyone else's third) and averaged 16:18 per runner to Smith Station's 16:45. Should be tested next week at the McCallie Invitational in Tennessee, with three SE Region ranked schools competing (No. 7 Oak Ridge, TN, No. 9 Hoover and No. 10 Baylor, TN).

Next meet: Sept. 22, McCallie Invitational
10. BAYLOR (TN) Followed strong performance last weekend at the Clara Bowl Invitational by winning Saturday's 43-team Tennessee Classic by a whopping 61 points against Maryville, 57-118. Baylor put three in the top eight and six in the top 26 and averaged 16:39 per runner on tough course, to Maryville's 17:11.
2. Waldo du Plessis 16:10 3. Bill Matthews 16:14 8. Mike Meadows 16:45 21. Skylar townsend 17:01 23. Colton Popp 17:05 26. Brandon Lord 17:09 62. Taylor Dix, 17:57
