It’s often a struggle to determine the value of early-season clashes, as well as assess scenarios where an “underdog” team obvious performed extremely well and a “favorite” was not fully loaded or ready. It’s important to be fair, yet give credit where credit is due. And in elite-level prep cross-country, with the NTN Regional events being the new path to Portland, teams are more compelled to put the focus on the end of the year.
So what to make of the new Delaware Military Academy Invitational Thursday, where the SE#5 Tatnall DE girls overwhelmingly defeated NE#1 Colts Neck, 23-59? Junior Juliet Bottorff (18:46) took the individual title over Padua junior Meghan Smith (18:55). Then after Colts Neck sr Allison Linnell came in (19:05), Tatnall had a tremendous pack take the next six spots, bracketed by #2 Carly Simmons (19:43) and #7 Katie Kershner (20:11).
Colts Neck was obviously without its #1, Bri Jackucewicz, who reportedly has had a great summer of training, but was sitting out with a sore calf. The Cougars’ likely #3 was missing, too, however, as junior Allie Flott ran the JV race as a tempo run to test a sore knee. There was also an unfortunate bit of scheduling as Colts Neck had to push to win a dual against another top Jersey team Tuesday, then found a few of its other varsity runners not yet up to the back-to-back efforts.
But Tatnall has done a super job of replacing the three top-five runners it lost to graduation from last year’s squad, which placed 12th at NTN. “We took a hit with graduation, but we had a strong JV group coming back and all of the kids had a great summer,” said Coach Pat Castagno. “I’m really excited about the way the girls packed together and communicated during the race.”
To their credit, Coach Castegno downplayed the significance of the race and Colts Neck mentor Jim Schlentz had praise for the Delaware foe. “We’re not kidding ourselves,” said Castagno. “Colts Neck is a veteran NTN program and it could be a completely different story later. They were without their #1 and another runner ran JV. We told our girls to be happy about the race, but look down the road.”
“We were very flat today,” said Coach Schlentz, whose team was 4th at NTN last year, losing super senior Ashley Higginson, but returning five varsity runners. “Tatnall is very fit and looked tremendous. Even if we hadn’t raced Tuesday, I think we still would have lost. We’re not where they are right now.
“But we don’t have a problem with it,” he continued. “We know our girls are better than that. We couldn’t have a race this coming Saturday because of Yom Kippur, so we ran these two meets this week. We’re really treating September more like August, though. We really don’t have another big meet until October 20. With the NTN Regionals, the season is more like the NCAA season where you can really peak for the end.”
