Preview: Emma Brink, Willie and Chelsea Brown lead entries - Performance Lists

By SteveU
  • Girls DistancesEmma Brink, the Sacred Heart KY soph who broke out at the U Kentucky Invite mile at 4:55.75, then was 5th at Nike Indoor at 4:55.12, is the outstanding entrant in the 1600 and 800.  Her speed will be tested, though, by Hurricane WV jr Josie Crouch, the West Virginia 2008 state champ in the 800 (2:18) and 400.  Crouch is also the key to Hurricane’s 4x800, seeded at 9:40.  Alex Dent, also on that 4x8, is the top seed in the 3200 at 11:20, though Cabell Midland WV’s Rachel Williams could challenge if Dent indeed does the tough double.  Woodford County KY jr Anna Bostrom should give Brink a good run in the 1600, too.
  • Boys Distances – St. Xavier KY runners look to make a big splash here.  Sub-4:30 miler Matt Hillenbrand is the top seed in the 1600 and 2nd in the 800, while junior Jackson Carnes heads 3200 entries at 9:33, which he has run twice this year.  The top 800 seed, though, is Willie Brown of Cleveland John Adams, who scorched a 1:53.52 at the Ohio indoor champs.  Louisville Butler is the top seed in the 4x800 at 8:13.
  • Boys Sprints/Hurdles – The aforementioned Willie Brown is also the top seed in the 400, along with teammate John James.  Ft. Knox KY star Courtney Edwards also looks for multiple victories with his top seedings in the 110H (14.95, but PR of 14.76), 300H (38.90), and triple jump (45-07).  Louisville Male could sweep the shorter relays, the 4x1 and 4x2, but look for Cleveland John Adams as a possible sub-3:20 team in the 4x400.  Male’s Chisom Omenyinma is the best bet for a sub-22 in the 200, while the duo of Loreal Martin and Lamount Bryant are top seeds in the 100.
  • Girls Sprints/Hurdles – Top IL speedsters Evanston Township could sweep the sprint relays.  They are currently ranked 7th and 2nd in Illinois in the 4x1 and 4x2.  But Butler’s Chelsea Brown should get some sprint and hurdle honors for the host state; she is entered in all three sprints and the 300H.  Expect good battles with her and Paducah Tilghman’s DeAudrea Horne in the 400 and 200.  Brown is 2nd seeded in the 300H, but leads the state and should rule.
  • Boys Field Events – Louisville Ballard’s Andrew Miller is ranked 2nd in Kentucky in both the shot and the disc and could sweep, though , Oloruntoba Omotinugbon of Jeffersonville IN will battle him with the platter.  The aforementioned Edwards could add the TJ title to his hurdle bids.  On the girls side, Evanston IL’s Amanda Caines could rule the TJ after taking the IPPT meet.  Jeffersonville IN’s Austina Smith is the only high jumper over 5-5.  Bullitt East KY’s Jackie Stevens has a strong chance to sweep the throws.
