| Saturday - Chalonda Goodman GA (US#1 100-200 double) and Tavaris Tate MS (US#1 200-US#2 400 double and 46.4 4x4 relay leg) earn DyeStat MVP Awards- RESULTS- Newnan GA sr Chalonda Goodman blazes two US#1s - 11.64 100 (-1.4w) and 23.69 200 (-0.2w) - to dominate the dashes and repeat as girls DyeStat MVP.
- Mississippi speedster Tavaris Tate (Starkville MS) gets his own DyeStat MVP double, burning a US#2 46.74 in the 400 to turn back Andre Carter's (Alexander GA) 46.97, then ripping a US#1 20.89 200 (1.6w) to set a meet record.
- In front of the home crowd, St. Paul's Episcopal AL vaulter Neal Tisher wins the girls PV with a meet record clearance of 12-6.50, defeating Merritt VanMeter (Country Day LA jr) on misses, then rules the 100H in 14.49 (+1.4w).
- Stonewall Jackson's Damien Thigpen scorched an impressive US#2 36.75 in the 300H.
- Jumping in a familiar environment, St. Paul's Episcopal's Katherine White scales a meet record 5-09.25 for the victory in the girls high jump
- The Catholic Baton Rouge LA boys win all three relays, speeding to a meet- and all-time Lousiana state record 7:53.45 4x800, zipping to a 42.07 4x100 win, and then finishing off the meet with a 3:20.03 4x400 victory
- St. Louis LA sr Thomas Reinecke scares the meet record in the PV, finally winning in 16-01.
- Damar Forbes (Martin Luther King GA) spans 24-00.00 (-1.5) on his final leap to secure the boys LJ win
- Pass Christian MS jr Cory McGee drops down to take the girls 800 in 2:12.73, while UMS-Wright's Robert Willett comes from behind to take the boys 800 in 1:55.27
- Hoover AL sr Patrick McGregor, owner of two sub-4:10s indoors, takes the boys mile in 4:18.13
- Georgia sweeps the deuce: Grayson GA jr Kirubel Erassa wins the 2M with a stunning come-from-behind 9:16.82, while Collins Hill GA sr Amanda Winslow pulls away to decisive 2M win in 10:45.06
- Brittany Porter (Tower GA) scores the horizontal jumps double with a 19-04.00 (0.0) LJ win and 37-10.50 (0.0) TJ victory
- Port Allen LA's Jonathon Johnson wins a close 100 in 10.53 (+0.4w), .03 up on Opelika AL's Corey Grant.
- American Christian AL sr Bekah Hoppis successfully defends her javelin title with a 131-10 heave

Alabama athletes rise to the challenge again

Mobile, Ala., Saturday, April 4—Chalonda Goodman of Newnan (Ga.) and Tavaris Tate of Starkville, Mississippi lived up to their billings as two of the nation’s top track and field athletes when they were chosen as Most Outstanding Performers in the Mobile Challenge of Champions.
Certainly, Goodman’s double victory in the 100 and 200 meters (11.64/23.69) and Tate’s sweep of the 200 and 400 (20.89/46.79) were noteworthy. But perhaps just as remarkable were the performances of Alabama athletes.
Twelve events were won by athletes from the state. Just as impressive was that seven of them were won by Mobile-area athletes. It apparently proved one thing—in a major national meet such as the Mobile Challenge of Champions, competition brought out the best in many performers.
Cases in point:
- Neal Tisher and Katherine White, both of Mobile’s St. Paul’s Episcopal, set new meet records—Tisher flying 12-6 ½ in the girls’ pole vault, breaking the record of 12-6 set by Lacy Janson of Sarasota (Fla.) Cardinal Mooney in 2001, and White clearing 5-9 ¼ in the girls’ high jump, breaking the old record of 5-9 set on 2004 by Carmia Carrol of Southern Lab. Tisher also won the 100-meter hurdles, running away from the field with a personal best of 14.49.
- Hoover’s Patrick McGregor, the nation’s #2 miler indoors, defeated a strong regional mile field, winning in 4:18.13. Although his time was not exactly blazing, he made one very valid point, especially after performing so dismally (14th in 4:43) at last year’s Challenge of Champions meet: “You’d like to think that you can PR every week, but you got to pick your battles. Last year’s performance was in the back of my mind, but that’s nothing I can do anything about. Right now, I have nothing to prove; I just go out there and do the best I can.”
- McGregor’s teammates, Anthony May and Matthew Braswell, certainly did the best they could. After last year’s heart-breaking loss in the high jump in the Challenge of Champions, May came back and won it this year, clearing 6 feet 8 inches. Braswell won the javelin with a 184-6 throw, upsetting fellow Alabamian Ben LaPane of Mobile’s Murphy, who came into the meet with the best throw in the state.
- UMS-Wright’s Robert Willett solidified his standing as a nationally-ranked 800-meter runner, outlasting Grayson, Georgia’s Billy Kovallczyk 1:55.27 to 1:55.53. Willett, who had earlier ran on the Bulldogs’ third-place 4 X 800 meter relay team—which clocked 8:01.01—had to come from behind in the race and run down early leader Quatez Rodgers of Starkville in order to get the win. Said Willett later: “I just wanted to get into a good position to win. The leader (Rodgers) looked like he was tiring, and I wasn’t feeling that bad. At first, I though I was going to be too tired from the 4 X 800, but I was able to make a move.”
- Willett’s teammate, Sidney Jordan, one of the state’s best discus throwers, continued his success in that event, winning with a 164-4 toss.
- Two Mobile girls’ relay teams—McGill-Toolen’s 4 X 800 meter relay team, consisting of Sage Blackwell, Emily Dolan, Megan Hawkins, and Carmen Carlos, and Murphy’s girls’ 4 X 100, consisting of Janae Jones, Alexandria Montgomery, Talisha James, and Amiracle Watson—scored convincing victories. McGill-Toolen won the 4 X 800 in 9:41.21, defeating Pensacola, Fla.’s Pine Forest (9:46.10) and Collins Hill, Ga. (9:50.04). Murphy ran the fastest 4 X 100 relay time of a Mobile-area team in more than 20 years, winning with a spiffy 47.59, well ahead of Pine Forest (48.14) and another Mobile area team, Prichard Blount (48.51).
- And another McGill-Toolen athlete, Quinten Petty, won the triple jump with a 47-2 effort that was a new personal best for him in that event. For Petty, who finished seventh in that event a year ago, the win was especially satisfying: “Coming into the meet, I wanted to do my best, get a personal record and impress everyone.”
For meet record breakers Tisher, who came in with the second best outdoor clearance in the country (13-1), and White, the victories were especially sweet.
“It was a little windy out there, but it was a gorgeous day,” Tisher said of the pole vault competition, which included Merritt Van Meter of Country Day, La., who wound up clearing 12-6 ½ but finished second because of more misses. “My run was a little off, and I didn’t get many workouts because of field trips and the rainy weather. But it’s time to get back to work on the 14-foot poles. I’ve got three or four meets left, and I want to see 13 feet again this year.”
As for White, a sophomore whose main competition came from several other Alabama jumpers—Hoover’s Brionne Williams and Murphy’s Alexis Paine (5-6) and Sparkman’s Katie Huston (5-4)—she felt the best was yet to come.
“I slowed down on my approach on 5-6, but I picked it back up at 5-8 and 5-9 ¼,” she said. “Right now, I’m trying to get to 5-10, and after that, 6-0.”
The Alabama crew showed it was at its best on the national stage with several other performances:
- Auburn’s Chance Jackson’s win in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.75)
- American Christian’s Bekah Hoppis’ repeat win in the girls’ javelin (131-10) and Murphy’s Lizzie Clough finishing 2nd (131-1)
- Auburn’s Howard Graves finishing a close second in the 2-mile to Grayson, Ga.’s Kirubel Erassa (9:16.82 to 9:19.18), and Mobile St. Paul’s Episcopal’s Stuart Graham finishing fourth (9:25.76)
- St. Paul’s Angel Watson notching a pair of runner-up finishes in the girls’ 100 and 200 (12.14/24.53)
Clough, a senior who was participating in her first full season of track, said this about competing in the Challenge of Champions: “It’s always good to come out and throw against people you never threw against before. What makes it even more interesting is how the weather can affect throws. It can help you or hurt you, and that adds to the excitement. When you get that good throw, it’s really worth it.”
