DyeStat XC Region Review NY Boys

Summary of New York Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 8, 2007

By Tom Cuffe, Dyestat NY Boys Regional Editor

NY is on Fire OR the Bronx is Burning ... Or It Was Just Gosh Darn HOT

Here is a look at how the top New York teams fared this past weekend which was the official Season Opening weekend in the Great State of New York.

The major story to kick off the season was the weather. After rather mild and enjoyable weather the two weeks prior to September 8 the weather gods decided that it was time for a good old fashioned NY style heat wave. The record high in the NYC area for the day is 94 and the official reading in Central Park was 92, making for one of the hottest days on record downstate. With thermometers topping the 90 degree mark and the oppressive humidity hovering in the 90’s as well, heat indexes across the state soared into in upper 90’s with many places recording over 100!!! This created a recipe for swampy like conditions for athletes, coaches, spectators and yes even the officials! But to speak to the issue of the athletes, times were not too fast throughout the state because of the harsh atmospheric interlude. A runner of the caliber of Lee Berube of Ticonderoga High, a Footlocker Northeast contender mind you, could only muster a 17:47 in his winning effort at the Saranac Lake Invitational in upstate NY. Here is a look at how the top teams made out in this weeks action.

#1 Shenendehowa

#3 Shaker

#4 Queensbury

These teams all competed at the Shaker Invitational, aka The Edwin Springstead Invite. Shenendehowa placed second to a strong Queensbury team by a score of 43 to 46 with Shaker taking home third in this battle of Section 2 powerhouses – WOW, what a way to open the season with three NTN NY caliber teams answering the gun! This was a narrow win by the Q Men as they were led by the individual winner Matt Flint who recorded a winning time of 15:57.5 – Matt will be one of the top contenders this year for many individual titles and will vie for overall state supremacy. It is to be noted that top middle distance man Zac Suriano DID NOT compete for the Shen Plainsmen this weekend. His current status is unknown but look for him to have a huge impact once he returns to the line-up. It should also be noted that both Shenendehowa and Queensbury has some very strong performances in the JV race and those athletes will assuredly help out these two teams as the season progresses.

#2.Smithtown

Did not open up yet! We will most certainly get you all the details when they do get ready to rock & roll. They are led by Senior Giovanni Signoretti who was  Second Team All NYS  last year and they have a proven group of harriers to back up the low number which he will post each week.

#5.Warwick Valley

Coaches Tim St. Lawrence and Mike Potter are taking their charges along slowly this early season. They are in a training mode until their season opener which will be on Saturday, September 22 in Orlando Florida at the Edgewater Invite.

#6.Chaminade

The Flyers out of Long Island and the Catholic High School Athletic Association of Greater NY are coached by Mr. Bill Carriero one of the best in NYS.

Here is a look at the Pre-Season CHSAA poll by Kevin Buckley:

The Buckley Rankings (Pre-Season)

1. Kellenberg Memorial..."the year of the twin;" Elnicks + Posch + guys who are better than  you think; I know what opposition coaches and athletes are thinking, but you're wrong;week one dual meet vs. Chaminade is pointless, but intriguing; the gaunlet has been thrown down

2. Chaminade..."twins II;" Tonn, the Shifty Schiek, the "Mig," and some tough new sophs; the Flyers will not go quietly; there is no McDermott family member for the first time in a millennium

3. Fordham Prep...Altenau + last year's soph 3200 relay; did we say that Van Cortland is a half-milers course; Febles' crew ready to lock horns with #1 & #2

4. St.Anthony's...Dearie in year 2 of second time around has a talented ensemble flying under the radar; Frosh champ Murphy won't hurt either

5. Monsignor Farrell...the Lion cubs are now grown up, but the last year's stellar soph squad is stepping up in class; to Tom Cuffe...opposition coaches and athletes are thinking the same thing about your team as mine

#7.Guilderland

By all reports this Section 2 team, which is the alma mater of the legendary BRD (Brian Rhodes-Devey, for the masses, who is currently wearing the burnt orange of UT = The University of Texas) will have a quality front runner in Roland Graves and a very solid supporting cast to back him up. More on the Dutchmen as we move forward as they did not open up this past weekend.

#8.Cornwall

#10 Arlington
Cornwall has a very strong team with a legit front runner in Colin Anderson. Very interesting that Cornwall and Arlington went head to head with each other at the Washingtonville Invitational this past weekend and even more interesting that they had to go to the 6th man tie breaker. Meet score deadlocked at 38 to 38 goes to the tie-breaker.

#9.Fayetteville-Manlius

The word on the street is that FM is rebuilding. Or could it be that the magical wizard known as Coach Bill Aris is just concocting some special brew for this 2007 cross-country season. The Hornets traditionally open later than most squads. With virtually no one returning from their powerhouse squads of the past three years what will their season opener bring? Stay tuned!!!

Other team performances of note:

Kellenburg

Washingtonville

In the above mentioned Washingtonville Invite, the host school Washingtonville & Kellenberg went head to head with Wizards edging out the Firebirds 34 to 39. It should be duly noted that Kellenberg did not run with one of their tops runners in Michael Elnick.
