Chanelle Price Launches Season with Olympian Goals

New York NY 4/18/2008 -- Chanelle Price is the brightest star in this edition of the revived New York Relays.
This is the Easton PA senior's first major meet of a season that she hopes will peak at the US Olympic Trials with a national high school record in the 800 meter run. Price's 2:02.38 at last year's USATF Championships makes her the third fastest US high school girl ever in the 800 behind two legendary runners -- Kim Gallagher 2:00.07 in 1982 and Mary Decker 2:02.29 in 1974.
Since winning the 800 at the National Scholastic Indoor Championship last month at the New York Armory in 2:05.93, Price has stayed close to home in low-key dual meets. Easton coach Andy Messa reports that she has been running miles to build her endurance, with a best of 4:56. She has also split 2:05 and 55.6 in relays.
Price will have respectable opposition Saturday in the form of Charlene Lipsey of Hempstead NY, winner of the 800 at the Simplot Games in Idaho in February and third to Price at NSIC.

The meet starts today with day 1 of the heptathlon and decathlon. Defending heptathlon champion Marisa Kefilidis of the Dalton School across the East River from Icahn Stadium is entered. Ninety teams will be on hand Saturday for a full slate of events.
Other expected highlights:
- Boys 400 -- Tewado Latty of White Plains NY, a 48.24 runner and New York outdoor state meet runner-up last year, and Troy Faulkner of Curtis NY, who moved to Staten Island from Virginia Beach last summer, 48.88 indoors at NSIC.
- 4x1600 relays -- Good matchups in both boys (Warwick Valley and Chaminade) and girls (Bronxville and Warwick Valley) races.
- Pole Vault -- Brian McGovern of Mount St. Michael's, a 16-2 vaulter returning from appendicitis that caused him to miss indoor nationals and the New York state meet.
- Boys & Girls HS -- prepping for Penn Relays in the sprint relays with star anchor Nadonnia Rodriques, the national leader indoors in the 300 (38.39)and 400 (52.83).
