9th Annual Marine Corps Holiday Classic
Thursday, December 27, 2007 - The New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory, NY NY
DMRs, 800s are expected highlights
John Nepolitan Preview
The indoor season may just be starting, but some teams are already looking toward the spring and a possible chance to run a time fast enough in the seldom run distance medley relay to get them into the Penn Relays. The featured events at the 2nd mega meet at New York’s Armory Track and Field Center include both a DMR and an invitational 800, both which promise to send 2007 out with a bang.
Boys DMR – Coming hot off successful cross country seasons, many of the area’s top distance squads will face off in the first featured race of the day. Leading the field will be NTN 11th place finisher Warwick Valley (NY), but the Purple Wave will not be alone battling for the win. Also toeing the line will be:
- NY Fed meet 5th place-finishers Shaker;
- NJ XC State Meet of Champs runner ups Christian Brothers Academy, which always seems to have a team in the running to make it into the Penn Relays DMR;
- NY Cross Country Federation 3rd place team Smithtown, sure to have All State runner Giovanni Signoretti on the squad;
- St Benedicts Prep(NJ), which should feature Foot Locker Nationals 6th placer Brandon Jarrett on the team;
- And West Windsor South (NJ), which is likely to feature its own Foot Locker Finalist Brian Leung.
Other teams that could be in the mix include Iona Prep(NY), Fordham Prep(NY) and Ridgefield(CT), all of which year in and year out produce quality relay teams. When the starter raises his arm, Danbury(CT) may be on the line; the school is listed in the girls race and may yet be added to the boys field.
Girls DMR – Leading the field will be NTN 11th place finisher Warwick Valley(NY). Leading Warwick will be All State performers Tori Pennings and Lillian Greibeland. Cardinal O’Hara(Pa) is one of the few teams that has already run the event this season, having run 13:03 at the start of December. Ridgefield(CT) finished 3rd in the Connecticut XC State Open and could find themselves among the leaders. The girls race may not look as deep as the boys does, but that does not mean it will be any less exciting.
Boys Invitational 800 – Khaliff Featherstone(Gratz, Pa.) ran a textbook race in taking the seeded heat of the Loughlin Games 600 meters, but he would lose the title to a faster time in the 2nd section. Here Featherstone will not have to worry about that happening as there is only one section of the Invitational 800. Featherstone will be sure to try and make up for his disappointing lose here in this featured event. Challenging Featherstone could be the New Jersey duo of Palmer Ford (Absegami, NJ) and Brian Laskowski (Bishop Eustace, NJ), both sub 1:55 performers last spring, as well as 3 runners from always-tough Fordham Prep(NY) – Harley Griffiths, Zach Keefer, and Carlos Petrovich – a school that always seems to have a very strong 4 x 800 team.
Girls Invitational 800 – Leading the girls 800 field is Loughlin Games mile champ Brianna Welch (North Shore, NY), who in 2007 as a freshman ran a quick 2:09. Looking to challenge Welch will be Shaniel Chambers (Chester, Pa) who finished 3rd recently at the Loughlin Games 600 in a swift 1:34.
