DyeStat XC Region Review NY Boys

Summary of New York Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 29, 2007

By Tom Cuffe, Dyestat NY Boys Regional Editor

THE NY METS FOLD BUT QUEENSBURY & WARWICK VALLEY MARCH ON!!

#1. Queensbury

#4. Shaker

– The Q men are having a simply awesome season under the leadership and guidance of long time mentor Mr. Bob Underwood. The team has a legit statewide and NE threat in Matt Flint, who has been steadfastly pacing this National caliber team week in and week out. With that said, Craig Weiss, a junior from Shaker, had some race on Saturday just nipping Flint by six tenths of a second in this Section 2 battle! This weekend saw the Spartans compete at their own Queensbury Invitational just off of I-87 (aka The Northway) and once again they won but this time by the narrowest of margins over a very good Shaker team: QUEENSBURY 53 – SHAKER 55. The strength of Queensbury’s fifth man gave them the victory. If we analyze the score thru four men it looks like this: SHAKER 32 – QUEENSBURY 37 and a comparison of fifth men:

15 #696 Benway, Alex 12 Queensbury 5:24.9 16:49.34 15
23 #810 Sedgwick, Devon 12 Shaker 5:35.0 17:20.58 23

Queensbury's five man compression continues to impress as it was a mere 54 seconds this week. The plot thickens boys and girls – stay tuned as the racing is just getting interesting!!!

# 2. Shenendehowa
– The Green & White under the direction of Coach Mark Thompson are gearing up for another clash with their Section 2 rival Shaker this coming weekend at the Grout Run in Schenectady, NY. He question arises will 1:52/4:15 man Zac Suriano return to potent Shen line-up?

#3. Kellenberg Memorial
– The blue clad Firebirds led by the Elnick twins Mike & Tom or Thomas & Michael took the weekend off to train with long time coach and CHSAA Rankings guru Kevin Buckley in a secluded location with top secret clearance required. The Elmicks plus Billy Posch make Kellenberg’s top three one of the most dynamic in NYS!

# 5. Warwick Valley
– We’re off to see the Wizard the wonderful Wizard of Oz (sing it baby!). So Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy and Sneezy are looking to move into the Land of Oz (Oz is now located just off of the Quickway). So, another meet – eh – and another annihilation by the boys from Warwick Valley = Ackerman, Leuchanka, Fox, Prial, and Miniger = 16 points!!! Five man compression of 14 seconds – LIONS, TIGERS and BEARS – OH MY (squared)!!!

Wait, a 14 second compression are you kidding me, bejesus that is simply outstanding, that is a great xc effort. For my money right now Warwick Valley is the BEST TEAM IN NYS!!!!! WV will go into a two week training block and will next compete at the Manhattan College Invitational “the Biggest and the Best” at Van Cortlandt Park in da Bronx – where real baseball is played. I am praying that they have the quill pens, ink (crushed berries?) and papyrus ready to roll for this edition of MCXC (oak tag be damned!)

#6. Burnt Hills
– Supposedly Pittsford Mendon beat Chip Button’s Burnt Hills harriers at the Mc Quaid Invitational in Rochester, NY this past Saturday. I know that did not run in the Championship section opting instead for the “AA” instaed of the “AAA”. I am sad to report that we have not gotten any “official” results from that meet as of yet – rather embarrassing I must say for a meet that has been around for 43 years. The “alleged” score was 127 to 134 with Burnt Hills 7 points in arrears. This meet now enters the witness protection program along with all of the results (no this is not an episode of The Soprano’s for that is NJ based, this may qualify for a segment and or a scene in “Goodfella’s” actually the more appropriate genre would be A Bronx Tale written and staring Chas Palminteri).

# 7. Arlington
– The Admirals dod it again (yes, dod it – see Steve King). Here is a briefing from Mr. Steve Arnett:

Mr. "C" ........ just a line to say that we easily won the Kennedy/Sterling Invitational with 16 points ..... this was a small meet as you might assume (I coached at JFK for ten years throughout the 1980's) however let me give you some perspective ....... our first two runners - Adam Doherty 16:15.3 and Jared Leslie 16:15.9 (first & second) both dipped under Hakon Devries (runnerup at Feds and 8:58 two mile fame John Jay East Fishkill) course record of 16:16.0 ......... and last years Section1 AA champion Brendan Ceriello's 16:22 winning performance. These times were backed up by John Muller's (3rd) 16:29.4, Dan Kane's (4th) 16:40.7, Zach Fitzsimmons(6th) 17:27.3, and Alec Wise's (7th) 17:28.2 ..... We are following last years training and racing schedule and will be at St. Anthony's next week as we were last year ..... feel free to pass this info to anyone who might find it useful ..... full results can be found on eliteracing systems.com - as always keep the faith.. Steve Arnett .... Arlington XC

Bottom line is the Arlington Admirals is quite good! And killer top three with #4 not too far behind.

# 8. Smithtown
– The men from the Town of Smith (Town de Smith in French) were out on the hills and dale of their locale “putting in some work”.

# 9. Cornwall
– Head coach Mr. Dave Feuer and Colin Anderson & Co. have been having a wonderful season to date. They last won the Red Raider Invy last week with 29 points. The Cornwall squad is on a remarkable roll thus far this season. The Green & White are a team to watch!

# 10. Liverpool
– Be careful what you wish for. I just got the AAA team results from Mc Quaid. Liverpool gets 5th overall behind a very good Webster Thomas team and finishes 18 points behind Section 4 power Ithaca High. Ithaca averages a very respectable 16:01 over this time tested 3.0 mile (FLAT = TEXAS FLAT!!!). Look for Ithaca to make a move in the NTN NY rankings. Ethan Hickey continued his fine running for the Liverpudlians, well done!
