DyeStat XC Region Review NY Boys

Summary of New York Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 15, 2007

By Tom Cuffe, Dyestat NY Boys Regional Editor

A fun week here in NYS. The weather was simply awesome and the performances followed suit. Seven of the top 10 teams were in action with several other squads a knock, knock, knocking on heavens door.

#1. Queensbury
The Q Men take the weekend off to train. They ran a dual meet on Tuesday and went 1-9 for a perfect score of 15. Next up the “pre-NYSPHSAA” meet at the Norwood State Invitational on September 22.

Here are the dual meet results:

# 2. Shenendehowa
Took the weekend off to put in some work. The Plainsmen are now under the tutelage of new coach Mark Thompson who replaced the legendary Matt Jones as the head cross-country coach. Jones tenure at Shenendehowa in Clifton Park was truly special as his teams over the past decade were nothing short of spectacular. We wish coach Thompson every success with his harriers this fall. Shen will be in action on the NYS Fed Meet course this weekend at the Bowdoin Park Classic.

# 3. Smithtown
Smithtown of Section 11 out on Long Island showed a big front runner in winner Giovanni Signoretti. As mentioned before Gio will give his team a very low scoring number every week as he will be at the front of every race he runs. This meet being a class race does not give a full representation of a scoring race or certainly not a Championship caliber race flavor. It does however reveil a huge gap in #1 to #5 of 77 seconds (one minute 17 seconds to the mathematicians out there). If that improves then so does the Smithtown hopes of "going ever higher"!

# 4. Shaker
As good as advertised, I would definitely say yes!!! Ed Springstead’s crew is coming along nicely led by Senior R. J. Sniffen who won the BOYS VARSITY C at the Suffern Invite this past Saturday. Sniffen’s 15:54 was the second fastest time of the day to Cornwall’s Colin Anderson who ran 15:37 to win the BOYS VARSITY B for the tough three mile layout.

# 5. Warwick Valley
Still in a super secret training mode for their official season debut this weekend down in Florida at the Edgewater Invitational. Rumors that coaches St. Lawrence & Potter are plotting to kidnap Mickey down in Disney are running rampant. To get in the mood the Warwick coaching staff has nicknamed their top seven: Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy and Sneezy! Stay tuned for the wonderful World of Disney.

# 6. Chaminade
The Long Island squad made the trip to City of Brotherly Love (or just outside those environs) to the Briarwood Meet. In a very stiff field with a swift pace Chaminade learned a few lessons and took sixth place in the Championship Race. Their total of 171 points is a bit shocking but a team of this caliber is sure to rebound.

# 7. Arlington & # 10. Washingtonville
The Admirals were blazing away at the Somers Invite as they took down a quality squad in Washingtonville 33 to 51. The team was paced by the 1-2 finish of Adam Doherty and Jared Leslie who outlasted Ian Donnelly of Washingtonville. Arlington had a very fine top four but had to wait an exasperating 42 seconds for their fifth man to close out the scoring. This could prove fatal in a larger meet. Washingtonville could be something else as the season progresses as their 5 man compression was 53 seconds over 5k and they proved to have good depth with 8 athletes in the top 22.

Colin Anderson runs the fastest time of the day at the Suffern XC Invite and records a fine 15:37 over the challenging three mile layout at Bear Mountain State Park just a few miles away from the famed United States Military Academy aka West Point. Cornwall went – 1, 4, 6,15 and 18 for 44 points and a 50 point win.

# 9. Guilderland
Looks like we’ll have a new member in the NTN NY rankings as Burnt Hills ran a superb race to topple NTN NY #9 Guilderland 43 to 58. Roland Graves ran a splendid race in winning the individual race over Jacob Smith of Canada 14:01 to 14:02. Burnt Hills packed 5 runners into the top 15 and had a wonderful 5 man compression of 41 seconds. Guilderland to their credit also had a fine day placing 1, 9, 13, 17, 18 for 58 points and taking the runner-up position in their own Invitational.
