DyeStat XC Region Review NE

Summary of Northeast Top Ten, Week Ending Nov. 10, 2007

By Matt Soja, Dyestat NE Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

With the Pennsylvania season over, the majority of the action last weekend shifted further east, or in the case of New England Championships, very far east. This meet, held in Maine, served as a great opportunity for Danbury boys and Hanover girls to reassert their grip on top spots in the Northeast, as they both scored 43 points to dominate the meet and win by triple digits. East Greenwich boys were the big surprise, upsetting Con-Val for second and earning a spot in this week’s rankings. Glastonbury girls finished second as expected. For more on this meet, see the meet page.

Elsewhere, the New Jersey group meet offered two exciting matchups on the boys side and one stunning performance on the girls. Unsurprisingly, Don Bosco held off CBA to take the parochial division title, but Morris Hills was on the losing end of a wild 3-way fight for the Group 3 title, with several teams hoping to take it all at the Meet of Champions on November 17. Meanwhile, Voorhees girls put on one of the greatest performances by any team in NJ history, breaking the Holmdel course team record and establishing themselves as the overwhelming favorites to win MOC.

The Massachusetts regional meets provided no challenge for Brookline boys and Bromfield girls, but Lincoln-Sudbury girls lost to their archrivals from Newton South in a great battle at Franklin Park. They will have another rematch this weekend at the state meet.

The upcoming weekend will be the last one before the grand NTN finale of the Northeast season at Bowdoin Park on November 24. While all the New Jersey teams will battle to the death at the Meet of Champions and Massachusetts squads will have their own state meet, most other teams will train and recharge before the most important race of their season at the Regionals.

BOYS

1. Danbury (CT)
The fourth-ranked team in the country dominated the New England Championships, scoring an impressive 43 points and winning by more than 100 over unranked East Greenwich RI. They put their top five in top 22 places and averaged 16:17 with a 28-second spread on the hilly, wet course. Now they get a weekend off before NTN Regionals at Bowdoin on November 24.

2. North Penn (PA)
No meet. They are entered in the NTN regionals as Du Hast, a popular metal song.

3. Brookline (MA)
Easily dominated the Eastern MA Division 1 meet, beating Lincoln-Sudbury 36-165 at Franklin Park. Next weekend’s state meet should give us more insight as to whether they can challenge North Penn for the second auto qualifier for NTN.

5. Don Bosco (NJ)
The Ironmen, ranked at the top of New Jersey’s hierarchy, held off a challenge from traditional state power Christian Brothers Academy at the Non-Public A state championships at Holmdel Park, winning 55-71 despite Molke’s slightly off day. They recorded a 16:44.6 average, the best of any group, setting them up as the slight favorites for this Saturday’s Meet of Champions, but it will be a very tough competition with several other teams with realistic chances of challenging Bosco for the crown. The weekend after that, an even bigger challenge awaits them at Bowdoin.

4. Anthony Belgiovine 16:19
6. Robert Molke 16:23

6. Germantown Friends (PA)
They ran in the New York Road Runners 5k cross country championships at Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday. Although official results are still not available, their coach Rob Hewitt provided unofficial times for their top runners. They are a confirmed entry for NTN.

Eddie Einbender 17:27

7. Morris Hills (NJ)
In a tight Group 3 race at the state meet at Holmdel they were upset by unranked West Windsor North and Millburn, losing to them by 28 and 12 points, respectively, with all three teams averaging slightly under 17 minutes. All three will be in the running for the Meet of Champions crown next Saturday, along with Don Bosco, CBA, Cherokee, and Haddonfield, in what promises to be one of the deepest team competitions in state history.

3. Sean Pohorence 16:12
10. Liam Tansey 16:30
26. Tyler Hendrickson 17:01
41. Vinny Chiusano 17:19

8. Coatesville (PA)
No meet. It looks like they are done for the year and not running regionals.

9. LaSalle (PA)
No meet.

10. Nashua South (NH)
They finished only seventh at New Englands, which will surely cost them a top 10 spot. They will have a chance to redeem themselves at Regionals if they choose to confirm their entry.

45. David Fernacz 16:52
83. Chris Mentas 17:19

GIRLS

1. Hanover (NH)
Their stellar season continued in Maine last weekend, where they steamrolled the competition at New England Championships. Scoring 43 points and winning by a 132-point margin over Glastonbury left no doubts about their New England supremacy. They averaged 19:07 on the tough course, as Griffin defended her individual title with a 23-second margin, and the next five girls finished within 34 seconds of one another. Last word was that they were planning to run NTN NE.

1. Georgia Griffin 18:07
7. Heidi Caldwell 19:06
14. Beth Taylor 19:21
24. Bridgette Black 19:29
27. Cate Brown 19:31
33. Grace Rodriguez 19:40
94. Meg Donohue 20:43

2. Voorhees (NJ)
The Hunterdon County harriers rewrote the history books at Holmdel Park last weekend, not only easily winning the New Jersey Group 3 title by a huge margin, but also breaking the team course record on the Garden State’s premier layout. Their 19:04.8 average was almost 4 seconds faster than the legendary Roxbury team from two years ago. Moreover, this was the first time in Holmdel history that three girls from the same team broke 19 minutes in the same race. Thompson’s 18:18 was a group record and she is one of the individual favorites for Meet of Champions crown.

In team competition Voorhees should be a shoo-in for the title, but it is interesting if they will go all out to become the first sub-19 team in New Jersey history or will they hold back a little bit before NTN Regionals the following week.

1. Melanie Thompson 18:18
5. Katie Petruzzellis 18:51
8. Katrina Spratford 18:56
16. Christine Curtis 19:37

3. Lincoln Sudbury (MA)
They were upset by unranked Newton South 43-55 at the Eastern Massachusetts Division 1 meet. The great rivalry between the two Bay State powerhouses will continue this upcoming weekend at their state meet, after which L-S will focus solely on qualifying for NTN nationals.

3. Andrea Keklak 18:56
6. Claire Arthur 19:18
13. Holly Clarke 19:28
14. Emily Mepham 19:32

4. Glastonbury (CT)
Finished second at New Englands but lost to Hanover by more than 130 points with a 20:03 average. They might have problems with depth at NTN Regionals, however.

9. Kristin Mitchell 19:10
18. Christine Vogel 19:25
51. Lindsey Crevoiserat 19:57
99. Charlotte Freeland 20:46
121. Emily Harris 20:59
163. Emily MacEwen 21:22
227. Siobhan Wilcox 22:37

Meet results: http://www.sub5.com/pvcxc/results/results07/newenglandgirls.txt

5. Emmaus (PA)
No meet, entered NTN Regionals as Suamme.

6. Central Cambria (PA)
No meet, as they will probably not run NTN because Carly Seymour has a great shot at winning Foot Locker Northeast.

7. Bromfield (MA)
The Central Mass Division 2 meet was a cakewalk for them as they scored merely 24 points and won by 39, but they should have their hands (and legs) full at the state meet this weekend.

7. Emily Reedich 18:29

8. Immaculate Heart (NJ)
They were upset at the Non-Public A state championships at Holmdel by unranked Monsignor Donovan and Red Bank Catholic. They will have a chance of avenging that loss at Meet of Champions, but they are not favored to be on the podium there.

No meet.

10. Haddonfield (NJ)
They easily dominated the Group 2 state championships, defeating Holmdel 56-113 with a 20:04 average. This weekend will tell how they can perform against superior competition at Meet of Champions, followed by an excursion to Bowdoin after Thanksgiving.
