DyeStat XC Region Review NE

Summary of Northeast Top Ten, Week Ending Oct. 27, 2007

By Matt Soja, Dyestat NE Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

The past week was all about local competition, with every single ranked team competing in league, county, or state championships and none of them facing off against each other. Predictably, there were very few surprises with only a couple teams losing their championship meet and with most winning by giant margins. The state action heats up next weekend with state meets in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, Open meet in Connecticut, Meet of Champions in New Hampshire, and sectional meets in New Jersey.

In a major upset, they lost their Class L state meet to unranked Nashua South, by a huge margin 59-89. Godfrey, their usual top runner, wound up running about a minute and a half slower than usual (possible asthma problems), but they would have lost to NS even if he won the race.

2. Voorhees (NJ)
On Thursday they took the Skylands Conference title, defeating Ridge 52-96. They averaged 18:55 on the speedy Pleasant Valley Park course, but right now they lack the cohesion to threaten Hanover again. Thompson’s 18:01 smashed the previous course record by 11 seconds while the team average was also a course record by 33 seconds.

Despite the pouring rain, the Eagles averaged 19:15, with nearly every girl running her personal best, and won the Bergen County Meet of Champions by an overwhelming 22-95 margin over a historic local powerhouse Ridgewood. 10. Southern Regional (NJ)
The Shore Conference meet was postponed because of weather from Saturday till Monday, but that did not help the Ocean County team. In probably the tightest meet in conference history, the top five teams were within ten points of each other, but Southern was the one getting the short stick, finishing fifth with 139 points, losing the 6th runner tie-breaker to two other teams and finishing ten points behind champions Mosignor Donovan. But Jillian Smith took the individual conference crown, winning in 18:15 on the tough Holmdel Park layout.
