 Meet Report

In 1982 British rocker Dave Edmonds sung “From small things mamma big things one day come” and the Hartford Riverfront Cross Country Festival is a 1st year meet that could develop into something big one day as the 1st edition showed. Entering the weekend Danbury(Ct) was ranked #1 in the Northeast and Harrier pre-season USA rankings and they were almost beaten by Northeast #3 Germantown Friends(Pa) 42- 43. While the team battle came down to the wire, so did the individual battle as Danbury’s Willie Ahearn gave Donn Cabral (Glastonbury) all he could handle pushing the 2006 Footlocker finalist all the way into the final 600 meters before having to give in.

Boys Invitational

In the spring of 2007 Scott Wojnarowicz (the coach of Capitol Prep) came up with the idea to put on a true cross country race that would be run totally on grass that is spectator friendly and bring together some of the best teams in the Northeast to battle it out early in the season. With the construction of a course through the woods along the Connecticut River and Northeast Regional powers Glastonbury and Danbury close by and willing to run, all the pieces were in place for the birth of what could become a major early season meet. A summer e-mail to Germantown Friends coach Rob Hewitt inviting his small but powerful team for a chance to face off with established regional powers by Wojnarowicz would fulfill the goal of having teams from different states in the region face off. For Danbury it would be a chance to pick up where they left off in 2006 as the #1 team in the state and a favorite to return to the Nike Team Nationals, and for Germantown a chance to see if their dream of making it to Portland was possible. When the final scores were announced Danbury had stamped itself as the team to beat in the state, beating rival Glastonbury(#4 in the recent Northeast ranking) by 21 points and the tiny Pennsylvania Quaker school had showed that it can compete with the best in the region, losing by just 1 point to Danbury.

The pace was fast early, as 2006 Footlocker finalist Donn Cabral (Glastonbury) would go right to the front and establish himself as the man to beat. Coming up to the mile Cabral, Willie Ahearn(Danbury) and Forrest Misenti (Xavier) started to gap the field, but right behind the lead three was a pack of 3 runners from Germantown. The battle for the team title was on and it was not going to be a walkover for Danbury. Right behind the top three for Germantown came the pack of Danbury, but being a small field the 4th, 5th and 6th men from Germantown were not very far behind. Disappearing into the backwoods section of the course Danbury was in control, but the race was not a lock. When the field returned to the view of spectators with approximately 700 meters to go Cabral and Ahearn had broken away and would battle almost to the line with the Glastonbury runner gaining a slight advantage over the last loop into the finish to record a swift 15:21.6 to 15:25.5 win over Ahearn. Behind the leaders, the Germantown top three had held their places coming home in 4th, 5th and 6th for a huge advantage. Danbury would get the next two scorers across the line in 8th and 9th place and through 3 men Germantown held a 15-19 edge. After each teams 4th runner had crossed the line, Germantown(10th) and Danbury (11th), the Pennsylvania school now held a 5 point lead. Justin Rau would lock up the win for Danbury with a 12th place finish for a final score of 42 to Germantown’s 43. Almost lost in 3rd place was a fine performance of Glastonbury, #4 Northeast, a team that with its very strong #1 runner could still be a factor when the Regional Championship rolls around.

It should be noted that Danbury was not at full strength as it’s #1 man, Matt Terry, has been recovering from a slight tendon injury. He was at the race running the course cheering on his team and will be back in action at the team's next major test when it travels to the Manhattan Invitational in mid October. Germantown will get another chance to test itself against powerful schools also when it will next travel to Manhattan as well, before pointing all it’s actions toward the regional meet.

Girls Invitational

Off the starting line Anna Shields (Lewis Mills) jumped right to the lead with Kristin Mitchell (Glastonbury) happy to follow, but they were not alone as Moria Kenny (Immaculate) and Katie Matthews (Rocky Hill) were close by. Little would change coming up to the mile post as Shields continued to push the pace. Shortly after the half way point of the 5000 meter course, Mitchell would glide into the lead and slowly build on her lead eventually creating a 20 second cushion over Kenny by the time she had crossed the finishline. Behind the leaders, Mitchell’s Glastonbury team was dominating the field, placing its scoring 5 runners in the top 10 – putting four over the line before another team had a 2nd runner home. In the end Glastonbury would score 28 points to South Windsor’s 67 and Rocky Hill’s 81.

Meet Quotes

Donn Cabral 1st place boy’s invitational– “Coming into the race I was thinking I was going to run alone today, but I really respect Willie(Ahearn of Danbury) and he ran a great race today pushing me the whole way….I am happy with my race, I felt good and strong the whole way….We went out fast(about 4:47), but it did not feel that fast…I really started to push it with 800 to go and felt good all the way into the finish.”

Willie Ahearn 2nd place boy’s invitational –“In the past I have not gotten in good summers, but I finally got in a good one…I wanted to come out here and go after Donn. I tried to push and hold on and make him earn it…Matt(Terry) and I are always neck and neck and when one of us is not in, the other has to step up. There have been places where I haven’t raced and he stepped up and today is a perfect example of him not racing and I up the level of my game…To me it was really going after Donn, I knew my team would take care of itself….We did what we had to do, come in here and make a strong impression and really show people that we are no joke.”

Rob Murry (Danbury coach) – “I thought we had a solid performance today we are definitely trying to build through September and into October and late into the season…..We did not run Matt Terry today. He had a little tendonitis at the end of August, he is back training but we felt that it was not in the best interest of him or the team to have him race today. We thought it would be best to let him build through September and be ready for Manhattan and the meets after that…..The guys really ran solid, our 8 through 14 guys filled in some of the time gaps created in such a small field…..We respect Donn and everything he has accomplished, but Willie ran 15:28 as a sophomore at the indoor nationals and last year at the end of track got a stress fracture so we felt on a flatter course like today he could keep contact…..Going into the season the guys from last year's team, really the top 5 and the DMR and 4 x 800 in the spring, all were expected to contribute at a high level this year, but Tucker Schaefer(9th overall) was a sophomore last year and does wrestling in the winter he really has stepped up this year, he has really elevated himself. Going into the season we thought we had 5 guys who were a little bit better than the rest of the team and he really gives us comfort knowing that if somebody is a little off we have another guy who can step in.”

Rob Hewitt (Germantown Friends coach) – “That was definitely what we came up here to do - see if we can run with the top team in the nation…I knew my top 3 were going to do what they did, our 4-5- 6 were going to determine how successful we are going to be. I thought our #4 man, Gus McKenzie, really did a good job in trying to bridge the gap and our 6th man Tom Waterman was a lot closer to our 5th man then I even imagined so that was a nice surprise….So we will take that for September 15th when you know you're going to be racing on November 24th, we will take this right here.”

Kristin Mitchell 1st place girl’s invitational – “It went out really fast, I think 5:35 for the 1st mile which is the fastest I have ever gone out….We (the top 4) were with each other through the mile and at about a mile and a half I went ahead and I was in front the rest of the way…..I was really happy with my race today.”
