The 40th Glenn D. Loucks Games started its first of three days of competition with a bang. With the only event on day 1 being the distance medley relay, all attention was focused on one event and those in attendance would be treated to monster anchor legs that brought the winning teams from deep deficits to victory.

The plan for the Guilderland (NY) team was to give their anchor leg, Brian Rhodes-Devey a chance by keeping the 2 time Footlocker finalist within 50 meters of the lead when he got the stick. By keeping the defending New York State 1600 meter champion that close the unit felt it would be good enough for the win. For Rhodes-Devey a win was not going to be enough; he wanted to run fast. In the end his teammates would keep him within the 50 meters and Rhodes-Devey would need just about all of his 4:08.0 anchor leg to secure the win.

A 62 opening lap would find Blaise Rewake(Iona Prep) on the lead with Max Kasak(Byram Hills) and Roland Graves(Guilderland) right behind. Little changed until Graves jumped to the lead after 600 meters, a move that would wake up Rewake. The Iona runner would once again get back to the front and hand off in the lead with a 3:04 split.

Behind Rewake Kasak would hand off in 2nd while Graves(3:13.7) would slip back through the pack some to hand off in 5th, 9 seconds behind the leader. Iona Prep would continue to lead with Byram Hills still in 2nd, following the 400 leg, but Jeff Geisendorfer(51.2) would run a 2.5-second personal best to move Guilderland up 1 place into 4th place, approximately 30 meters off the lead.

Half way through the 800 leg, Byram Hills had moved to the front, but they were not pulling away from Guilderland anymore. Mark Domaracki(1:58.1) would keep his team close and on target to give anchor man Brian Rhodes-Devey less than 50 meters to make up.

At the final hand-off, Byram Hills held the lead with Danbury passing Iona Prep in the last 100 meters and Guilderland in 4th. After 400 meters of the final leg, Rhodes-Devey would move into 2nd and set his sights on Phil Cawkwell(Byram Hills) up ahead. Looking strong over the next two laps, Rhodes-Devey closed in on Cawkwell and caught the leader with just 400 meters to go. The redheaded Guilderland runner did not hesitate and went right past the suffering Cawkwell to close in a swift 4:08.0 and a total team time of 10:12.24 to set a new meet record, just over 3 seconds over Bryam Hills(10:15.69).

The race in their own words:

Roland Graves – “I wanted to move up because I wanted to get us in position so Brian would not have to do all the work. So I sprinted there, then kind of died.”

Jeff Geisendorfer – “ I am a better chaser so I was not too worried. I was basically thinking of running hard and making sure I got good turns. I really was not thinking too much”

Mark Domaracki – “I tried to go out even and come back and try to keep Brian 50 meters or less from the lead, because I knew he could bring it home.”

Brian Rhodes-Devey – “Coming into the race, our whole strategy was to get me the stick within 50 meters of the leaders and I had enough confidence in my team and myself that if I could get it with 50 meters of the leaders it would be lights out. Jeff ran his fastest 400 by 2.5 seconds, so a big PR, and Mark ran great so I really had a lot of confidence in my team. I just told myself to pick them off slowly. I did not want to be in the lead with 600 to go – I still wanted people to chase – so I spent the 2nd and 3rd laps just looking at Cawkwell and with 600 to go he looked back that was when I really knew I could get him. Then I pulled by him with 450 left and just let it unravel. It was real nice to run fast individually, but I am more excited about the team victory. ”

The girls race would in many ways look like a repeat of the boys race. Out to a fast start and early lead would be defending champions Bay Shore(NY) with 2007 NSIC 800 meter winner Sarah McCurdy jumping out to the lead and running a fast 3:34 leg to hand off in first.

Kristin Reese takes the lead on the 1600 leg for Carmel.
Behind McCurdy would be the pack headed by Suffern(NY), Westerly(RI) and Carmel(NY). As the chasing three in the 400 grabbed their sticks it appeared that disaster had struck Carmel. After a strong opening leg by Catherine DeSarle(3:42.0), Kristie O’Reilly grabbed the stick and headed out on her lap when just a few strides into her leg as her hand came back it hit another runner and the baton went flying into the air.

Thinking fast, O’Reilly attempted to grab the stick out of the air. She would miss, but quickly grabbed the baton off the ground and got back into her leg. 64.1 seconds after getting the baton O’Reilly, who had recently run a 59 second leg, would hand off in 4th having lost ground to the leading three teams. Caity Tully would run a very smart but cautious leg of 2:19.5 which would cut into the lead of the top 3.

At the final hand off Bay Shore still had the lead and 2007 NSIC mile champion Callie Hogan was the anchor. Westerly(RI) would be in 2nd with 2 time Footlocker finalist Shelby Greany (Suffern, NY) taking the baton in 3rd. Kristin Reese, who had run the fastest anchor leg of the Penn Relays DMR, took the baton for Carmel. After 2 laps Reese had moved into 2nd and was quickly closing in on Hogan. With 1 lap to go, like Rhodes-Devey in the boys race earlier, Reese would move into the lead and simply pull away all the way to the finish running her 4 laps in 4:47.2 and bringing Carmel once again over the line in 1st with an 11:52.87 clocking.

The race in their own words:

Catherine DeSarle – “I wanted to make sure I got off the line really well and kept almost contact with her(McCurdy of Bay Shore), but I wanted to hold onto 2nd or 3rd and concentrate through the 800 and really work my last lap”

Kristie O’Reilly – “The baton got knocked out of my hand and bounce off my shoulder. I did not even think.”

Caity Tully – “All of a sudden I looked up and Kristie was way in the back. I went out under control, in fact a little too hesitant, I think. But I tried to kick it in at the last second so I can give Kristin somebody to run with.”

Kristin Reese – “ I just tried to remain calm, and not go out too hard and get excited, and just paced myself, kept my head up and focused on the people in front of me. After the 1st lap, going down the back straight, I heard my dad yell and I could see myself getting closer and every time I thought of that it made me want it more.

While Guilderland would head home so runners would attend the prom this weekend, the Carmel runners will return to race more this weekend with Reese the top seed in the highly anticipated 800 tomorrow.

The winning teams get their awards in the DMR.
