Raneri wins showdown. CT #4 Guilford stuns all, claims girls title
Highlights
The boys' individual race developed just as was expected, with John Raneri (New Fairfield) and Chris Bendtsen (Wolcott) going nose to nose. The pair passed the mile point in 4:56 and, in the 500 meters heading to the feature hill on the course ("The Green Monster"), Raneri put on a strong surge to gain a few meters daylight at the top. From there last year's runner up pulled away and, when he came back into view of the finish with 400 meters to go, the title looked locked up. Bendtsen charged over the last 200, but would come up 3 seconds shy of the win
The boys team race was a battle between two teams, with state #1 Xavier coming out on top by 4 over #2 New Milford. The big swing in the team score came when Xavier 2rd man Nick Lemon passed a pack of runners a few steps before the finish line
The fireworks of the boys individual race did not match the excitment of the girls championship, as 4 runners were together with 400 to go. Heading up "The Green Monster," Jackie Nicholas (Nonnweaug) had the lead, but Lauren Sara (Bunnell) had made a huge move over the previous 400 meters to move up to 2nd. When the runners came into view of the finish Nicholas, Sara, Meg Ryan (Fairfield Warde) and Reid Watson (Glastonbury) were together. Ryan and Nicholas had a small gap on the other two with 200 meters of up hill running to the finish remaining. Ryan, who had collapsed within 30 meters of the finish line last week, made the 1st move for the line. Nicholas responded and nipped Ryan at the line for an 18:22 - 18:23 win
The team battle was expected to be a replay of last week's "LL" race between Norwich Free Acdemy and defending champs Glastonbury. NFA was pretty much taken out of the race when the team's #1, Sarah Eagan, had to have an emergency appendectomy earlier in the week. Guilford, state ranked #4 coming into the day, jumped at the opportunity and with the low number provided by top finisher Valerie Williams (9th in team score) pulled off the upset win

CIAC GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP CROSS COUNTRY RACE 5KM WICKHAM PARK NOVEMBER 7,2009 OFFICIAL TIMEPIECE "OMEGA" RESULTS:WWW.NESPORTSTIMING.COM
Connecticut will be the first of the three Metro region complete to finish state competition Friday when runners attack the Wickham Park course at the CIAC State Open Championships. With weather expected to be cool but dry, a large crowd could be treated to some classic racing on a course that is very spectator friendly.
2:00 – Boys Championship – Xavier started the season at the top of the CT Coaches Poll and was replaced at the top slot for 2 weeks and then rose back to the #1 spot and has been there ever since. The men in black had the day’s best team time at last week’s CT Divisional Championships on the same Wickham Park layout. Using the team times from last weekend, Xavier looks to be the team to beat with “LL” runner up Hamden and “L” winner and current State #2 New Milford set to battle it out for 2nd. Xavier put its first four runners over the line within 20 seconds of each other, but had a gap back to its last scorer. The strength of the tight up front pack should be enough to carry Xavier to the win.
The individual race is expected to be a two man race between Chris Bendtsen (Wolcott), who posted the day’s best time at the Divisional meet with a 16:04, and John Raneri (New Fairfield) who last year was 2nd overall and the top underclassman and had the 2nd best time at the Divisional meet in winning the “MM” title. Those who are sure to be in the chase pack are Connor Rog (Fairfield Prep) , Chris FitzSimons (Hamden), Mike LaDuc (Canton) Sean Mueller(Cheshire), Ryan Laemel(Amity), Ian Albert(Xavier), and Richard Hume(Ridgefield). 2:45 – Girls Championship – Norwich Free Academy and Glastonbury have traded off sitting on top of the state poll all season. Glastonbury held onto the top spot heading into last week’s Divisional, but were beaten by Norwich Free for the “LL” crown. A rematch between the two teams could come down to just a few points. Glastonbury will not only be looking to climb back on top of the state rankings, but make it 3 Open championships in a row. The team title should not be looked upon as a two team battle as New Milford also finished ahead of Glastonbury in the “LL” race and will be in the mix when scores are being added up
While the boy’s individual title looks to be a two man affair, the girls could see a pack still together as the leaders start the final 200 meters climb to the finish. The list of contenders includes Lindsay Crevoiserat (Glastonbury), last week’s fastest runner Lauren Sara (Bunnell), Jackie Nicholas (Nannewaug), Reid Watson (Glastonbury, Sarah Eagan (NFA), Rosa Moriello (Naugatuck). A big question mark will be Meg Ryan (Fairfield Warde) who was well on her way to a sub 19:00 clocking in the “L” race before collapsing within 30 meters of the finish line and being passed by Sara. Ryan did finish in the days’ 4th best time and if she starts the race has to be considered a possible gold medal winner.
Besides State Open titles, athletes and teams are looking to advance to the 75th New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championships, set for Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Wickham Park. The top six teams and the top 25 individuals will advance to the New England’s to take on schools from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island
