Highlights

  • Oshane Bailey (Calabar, Jamaica) storms out of lane 6 to take the 100 meter win in 10.31.  The top  American was Donald Williams (Midwood, NY0 in 4th place in 10.81
  • In the boys 4 x 800 Pine Bush touched off 1st in 1:57.1.  After the 1st hand off Great Neck South was back in 5th, but Terrance Livingston grabbed the baton and brought his team all the way up to 1st with a 1:50.77 split.  On the 3rd leg top seed Liverpool moved up to the front with a 1;57.31 leg and the race for the victory was all but over.  Liverpool would close in 1:53.25 and would have enough to hold off Zavior Brown of Pine Bush who would split 1;51.50.  For Liverpool the final time of 7:45.91 would improve slightly on thier Metro #2 performance from the Loucks Games.  Pine Bush will move to #3 in the Metro region with thier 7:47.69
  • Claudia Francis (Cardozo) would jump right to the front of the girls 800 and pass through the 400 meter point in 63.67 with Emily Menges (Garden City) right behind in 64.03.  Down the back straight Menges would close and attempt to get by coming around the last turn, but Francis would hold her off.  One last time Menges would try to get by, but Francis would hold on for the 2:09.72 - 2:09.88 win.  In 3rd and closing best was Phyllis Francis (McAuley) who was almost 1 second back at 400 meters passing in 65.42 and finished 3rd in 2:10.33
  • Where the girls 800 went out fast, the boys went out slow with Daniel Zaccariello (St Joseph by the Sea) at the front in 58,42.  Moving best down the back straight was Sean Halpin (Iona Prep) who would grab the lead at 600 and begin to pull away around the final turn before Sean Atkinson (Nazareth) began a charge.  Halpin who was hoping for the USATF Jr qualifying time would have to settle for the win in 1:54.93 to Atkinson's 1:55.60
  • The girls 4 x 100 was split into 2 sections with Newburgh,(NY) taking the 1st section in 48.64.  The big showdown between New York and Jamaica would be featured in the 2nd section.   Cardozo (NY) would get to the lead from the gun and pull away for the win in a new Metro #1 time of 46.67 with Herbert Morrison(Jamaica) in 2nd in 47.01.
  • A great final 100 meter dual between Sheepshead Bay and Calabar (Jamaica) fell apart at the final hand off of the boys 4 x 100.  Coming into the last exchange the two teams were neck and neck, but the baton never made it into the hands of the Sheepshead Bay anchor and Calabar was left alone to fly home in 40.21.  The top American team would be Middle College in 42.47
  • Running in the women's 1500 Chelsea Sveinsson (Greenhill Addison, TX) stayed away from the fast pace at the front passing though splits of 65-2:13-3:09 with 1 lap to go- 3:25) to finish in a US #2 and #9 all time - 4:18.13.  At the front of the race 2008 Olympian Christin Wurth-Thomas(Nike) ran the fastest time in the world in 2008 crossing in 4:03.96
  • The day ends with a bang as Cardozo (NY) runs away from the field in the girls 4 x 400 to be the 1st team of 2009 to break 3:40 with a winning US #1 time of 3:39.96.  Morrison Tech (Jamaica) just nipped Mt Vernon (NY) for 2nd as both teams  got under 3:50 clocking 3:40.00 and 3:49.29.  Splits for Cardozo - Antyana Johnson 55.8 - Claudia Francis 55.0 - Tessa West 54.6 - Chamique Francis 54.5
  • In the last race of the day St Jago (Jamaica) pulled away from the field to stop the clock in 3:14.14.  The battle for 2nd saw Ramapo (NY) and Fordham Prep (NY) dip under 3:17 finishing 3rd and 4th in 3:16.50 and 3:16.66 the #2 and #3 performances in the Metro region this spring

N
ew York’s best vs Jamaica to highlight high school action

by John Nepolitan

Year after year fans at the Penn Relays have a chance to see the wealth of high school talent the island of Jamaica has, now track fans in New York will get a chance to see how some their best match up against athletes from the sprint powerhouse.  As part of the IAAF Reebok Grand Prix there will be an expanded high school schedule of events that will feature some of the best that the Metro region has to offer.  Here is a short look at the high school events on tap this Saturday at New York’s Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island in the East River.

Boys 100 (3:00pm)
Heading the New York challenge will be Indoor State 55m champion Miles Lewis ( Middle Country).  Leading the way for Jamaica will be Dexter Lee (Herbert Morrison) and Oshane Bailey (Calabar).

Boys 4 x 800 (3:05pm) - Win a Dyestatmetro T-shirt
An all New York affair will feature the #2 and #3 teams of the Metro Region.  Liverpool and Arlington both broke the 7:50 barrier at the Loucks Games and will again lock horns in what could be a preview of the New York State Meet.  Also in the mix could be Arcadia Invitational champions Monsignor Farrell, the top PSAL team Transit Tech, Iona Prep who just missed cracking 7:50 in the Loucks race, and Half Hollow Hills West who ran 7:50.92 to win the St Anthony’s invite in early May.  Great Neck South will be charging through the field when Terrence Livingston, who recently ran 1;50.39, gets the stick.

Girls 800 (3:20pm)
NSIC Champion Phyllis Francis heads the field which will also feature Brianna Welch (North Shore, NY) , aand Shevelle McDonald (St Jago, Jamaica).  One runner on a hot streak at the moment who could shock everyone is Garden City’s Emily Menges.

Boys 800 (3:25pm)
Indoor Eastern States Champion Sean Halpin (Iona Prep, NY) has the fastest time this spring among the New Yorkers entered based on his 1;53.35 from April at the Arcadia Invitational in California.  Not far behind in seasonal best is Sean Atkinson (Nazareth, NY) who ran 1:54.09 at the St Anthony’s Invitational in May.  For Jamaica, Waquar Decosta (Jamaica College) will be stepping to the line

Girls 4 x 100 (3:35pm)
Cardozo has the best time in the Metro region with a 47.17 clocking at the New York Relays held on the Icahn track.  Herbert Morrison (Jamaica) qualified for the Penn Relays Championhip final, but were disqualified after having run 46.91 in the trials.

Boys 4 x 100 (3:40pm)

It will be very difficult for any of the New York schools to take this race where they will face the Penn Relays Champion Calabar.  At the Philadelphia mega meet the Jamaicans ran 39.91 for the win with fellow islanders Kingston College 6th in 41.31.  Leading the way for the New Yorkers will be the Metro Regions #1 team Medger Evers who ran a fast 41.46 at the New York Relays.  Right in the mix is sure to be Sheepshead Bay who ran 41.54 this spring.  The battle between Medger Evers and Sheepshead Bay could be a preview of the upcoming PSAL Championships

Women’s 1500m (4:40pm)
Lining up with the elites will Chelsey Sveinsson(Greenhill Addison, TX).  Sveinsson is the US leader at the mile (4:46.85 in winning the Penn Relays) and the 3200 (in winning the Texas Relays.  Against high school competition this spring the sophomore is undefeated in all races from 400 meters through 3200.

Girls 4 x 400 (7:00pm)
At the end of the evening Cardozo, the #1 team in the Metro Region with a 3:45.32 season best, will face off against Herbert Morrison (Jamaica).  Metro #2 Mt Vernon is sure to be in the mix as will Garden City and Newburgh each who had gone under 3:54 this season.

Boys 4 x 400 (7:10pm)
In the high school final event of the day the top 2 teams from the Penn Relays Championship of America final will be on the line to face the best from New York.  Jago who ran 3:12.55 to win Penn and Calabar who was 2nd in 3:14.55 are sure to bring the crowd to its feet.  Leading the way for New York will be Ramapo who has run 3:17.48 this spring in taking the Loucks Games.  Never out of the running and in this race will be Newburgh, Fordham Prep and Springfield Gardens.
