With nearly 30 hours of track & field action over three days, the 44th NJ state relay championships provided plenty of memorable moments.

Here’s a look at what happened each day as the five championship meets were contested at the Bennett Center in Toms River.




Team Champs:
  • Non Public - CBA 52-37 over St. Joesph's Metuchen; Msgr. Donovan 60-52 over defending champion Pope John.
  • Group I - Glassboro edges Haddonfield, 45-42, for its first boys' title. Bernards girls win first championship since 1986, 51-48, over Haddonfield.
  • Group II - Rahway boys rally to edge defending champion Morris Hills, 48-44. Hopewell Valley girls wins eighth straight and state record setting ninth overall, 52-40 over Camden.
  • Group III - Irvington and West Windsor-Plainsboro North boys are co-champs with 28 points (Timber Creek third wih 27)..Seneca girls win first title, 40-22 over Neptune.
  • Group IV - Washington Township boys capture first title, 38-20 over Union. Southern wins second girls' title in three years, 59-40 over Millville edges Haddonfield, 45-42, for its first boys' title. Bernards wins first girls' title since 1986, 51-48, over Haddonfield tie at 28
Non Public Highlights
  • CBA wins its second straight title, fifth in the last six years, and record 18th overall on the boys side. Msgr. Donovan takes its first ever girls title.
  • Clayton Parros (Seton Hall Prep) rips a 22.1 leadoff on meet record breaking 4x200 (1:34.39), and anchors the winning SM (3:41.84) with come from behind 1:58.1 800 carry.
  • CBA gets wins in the pole vault and high jump to roll to its title.
  • Msgr. Donovan's Krissa Loretto keys title run with 5:14.1 anchor for winning DM (12:51.41) and 2:21.1 SM carry to bring her team across second. Msgr. Donovan also breaks meet record in the shuttles (34.53).
  • US #1 55 sprinter Dominique Booker burns a 24.7 anchor to cap Montclair Immaculate's meet record 4x200 in the girls' competition (1:50.31).
  • Union Catholic boys blast a 10:38.26. DM win, keyed by a 3:13.6 1,200 from Danny daCosta and 4:24.6 1,600 from D.J. Thornton.
  • Genevive Rybicki, (40-1 1/4) and Victoria Imbesi (38-10) had the two best throws of the meet as they combined for a meet-record 78-11 1/4 in the girls' shot put, addi54.9 for 400, Tyler ng nearly 10 feet to the mark they set a year ago of 69-2 3/4.
Group I Highlights

  • Kristin Smoot runs a pair of 2:21 800's on the runner-up DM (12:56.64) and third-place DM, a 59.5 400 on the third-place 4x400 (4:14.35) and split 26.6 on the third-place 4x200 (1:52.65) to lead Bernards to its first title since 1986, 51-48 over Haddonfied.
  • Bernards also wins the shutle hurdles (35.12) and 4x800 (10:11.40) and scores in all six events on the track.
  • Glassboro boys breaks meet record in the 4x200 (1:33.88), and win SM (3:44.90) to edge Haddonfield, 45-42, for its first title.
  • Junior Cameo Kirk ran a 4:20.4 800 anchor to give Shore second overall in the girls’ SM (4:22.81), split 59.3 on the runner-up 4x400 (4:13.33), and anchored in 27.0 for the sixth-place 4x200.


Group II Highlights

  • The Voorhees girls smash distance relay marks in the DM (12:24.81) and 4x800 (9:41.91). Lanie Thompson anchors both with 5:07.9./2:19.6 double.
  • Hopewell Valley wins the girls' 4x200 with meet record 1:45.61, takes shuttles in 33.73 and records four runner-up finishes on the way to its record setting ninth state championship. Julie Alexander anchored the 4x200 (25.4) and the shuttles (7.8) for Hopewell Valley.
  • Rahway wins the 4x400 in meet record 3:26.91 and takes third in high jump, the final two events, to nip Morris Hills by four form the boys championship.
  • Morris Hills breaks the DM record (10:35.82) and wins the sprint medley in 3:38.89. Liam Tansey hammers out 1:59.1 800 in DM and a 1:56.8 anchor in the SM. for Morris Hills
  • Delsea boys burn meet record 1:32.76 in the 4x200.


Group III Highlights
  • Jim Rosa runs 3:10.4 for 1,200, Mitsunobu Nakata 54.9 for 400, Tyler Corkedale 1:57.7 for 800 and Joe Rosa 4:21.8 on the 1,600 anchor to bring West Windsor-Plainsboro North across first in the boys DM in a US#4 and meet record 10:24.34.
  • Corkedale also anchors SM win (3:42.05) with 1:58.9 split as WWPN share boys title with Irvington.
  • Josh Evans makes season debut and anchors with sizzling 6.7 on the winning shuttle hurdles (30.90), and clears meet best 6-2 to lead Irvington to the HJ crown and a share of the team boys title.
  • Michelle Brown has splits of 25.5 on winning 4x200 (1:50.13), 57.8 on winning 4x400 (4:04.52) and 58.7 on runner-up SM (4:19.15).
  • Brett Johnson runs 3:07.2 1,200 leadoff leg for Ocean City in the DM
  • Nick Vena of Morristown throw 65-8 1/4 in the shot put.
  • Ariann Neutts anchors Roxbury to victory in the girls DM (12:26.86) with a 5:00.5 carry, and the 4x800 (9:43.68) with a 2:16.1 split.
  • Rising star A’jee Wilson, a freshman at Neptune, ripped a 2:16.3 800 on the winning SM (4:13.44), a 2:17.1 in the 4x800, and 57.3 on the runner-up 4x400 team.
  • Lisa Stuto of Brick launches the girls' shot put 41-9 3/4
  • FL finalist and All-America Chelsea Ley anchor in 5:03.5 for Kingsway's girls runner-up DM.
  • Chrissy Finkel clears 12-0 to lead Montville to meet record 20-6 in girls' pole vault.
  • Kingsway runs meet record 8:12.09 in boys' 4x800.


Group IV Highlights

  • Jill Smith has anchors of 4:59.4, 2:16.5, 2:16.1, and 58.1 to bring home four wins for the Southern girls in the DM (12:14.98), 4x800 (9:30.04), 4x400 (4:02.68), and sprint medley 4:09.96.
  • Chelsea Cox was on the same four relays as Smith, splitting 58.7 and 58.5 for her two 400 legs, and 3:43.2 for the 1,200 DM leadoff leg.
  • Robby Andrews blasts a 4:16.5. anchor to bring Manalapan boys across first in the DM in a NJ#2 10:30.98.
  • Washington boys win the sprint medley (3:37.77) and 4x400 (3:31.50)
  • NJ M of C outdoor 400 winner Isaiah Gill leads off with a 22.2 carry to ignite Plainfield's winning 4x200 (1:33.23).
