Ramapo (NY) boys burn up track, but end night on sour note
Nick Vena breaks own meet record
Ramapo NY was burning up the track all night and seemed to be on the verge of yet another red hot victory in the sprints. But then disaster struck. With three victories already in their pocket (two individually and one in the 4x200), Ramapo’s heavily favored 4x400 hit the track looking to add to its gold collection at the Metropolitan Invitational in New York at the New Balance Track & Field Center. But leadoff man Mike Abelard, who won the 200 (21.9) and anchored the winning 4x200 (US #2 1:29.2), crashed to the track, clutching his right hamstring after completing the first 200 meters

Ebony Young (photo left in the 4 x 400 by John Nepolitan) was tired and her legs were throbbing. But that didn’t stop the senior at Hillsborough NJ from turning in a great all-round performance at the Metropolitan Invitational. - After a 8 day layoff from throwing Nick Vena (Morristown, NJ) opens the meet with a win in the shot put with a meet record toss of 63-11 1/2
- Delbarton (NJ) junior Pat Schellberg comes though the 800 in 2:10 before taking over and pulling away for a 4:18.7 win in the 1,600 meters
- Coming from beind in the last lap, Sarah Pagano (Immaculate Heart, NJ) passes 5,000 meter national record holder Briana Jackucewicz (Colts Neck, NJ) in the last straight to win the 1600 in 5:08.9 to 5:10.6. Pagano then leads IHA to a win in the 4 x 800 in a fast 9:29.7
- With a bobbled stick from 3rd to 4th legs, Ramapo (NY) still takes the boys 4 x 200 with a swift 1:29.2. 2nd leg Kevin Malivert had already won the 55 in 6.2. Anchor man Mike Abelard takes 200 gold in 21.9
- Port Jervis's Sydnie Leroy ties the meet record in the pole vault with a jump of 12' 0"
- Another meet record in the triple jump by Ebony Young (Hillsborough, NJ) with a jump 38- 4. She also won the hurdles in 8.6
- Monroe Woodbury's (NY) Megan Patrignelli goes from the gun and wins the 800 in 2:14.4 just .3 short of the meet record
- Janelle Clayton (Suffern, NY) ties the meet record in the high jump clearing 5' 6"
