Weaver's Daundre Barnaby has a record setting day
As the New Haven Track and Field Center was emptying there was little doubt who the star of the Connecticut State Open Championships was. Daundre Barnaby (Weaver) had stepped onto the track three times and each time produced a performance that left fans amazed. Any one of his races would have been enough to garner a headline, but the combination of a new state record in the 600 meters, a US #3 time in the 300 meters and a scorching anchor leg that helped bring his team in to a meet record was something special especially when those 3 performances are part of a 5 hour meet and none of his events were the first or the last of the afternoon. | Highlights
- Hamden kicks the afternoon off with a win in the 4 x 800 in a swift 8:07.20. Danbury comes from behind to nip Amity for 2nd 8:10.51 - 8:10.53. Coming in they were 9th seed, but Weston comes from behind over the last lap to nip Conard in 9:37.37 - 9:39.51.
- Robert Guider (Danbury) grabs the lead on his final throw in the shot only to be nipped by Chad Nadeau (Plainfield) with a 55' 0" toss on the final throw of the competition.
- Daundre Barnaby (Weaver) grabs the lead from the gun and holds off Cas Loxsom (Wilbur Cross) over the last 150 to win in a new State Record of 1:20.29 - 1:20.65 - the #5 and 7 times in the USA in 2009 and # 2 & 3 on the dyestat metro elite.. Barnaby returns to win the 300 in a US #3 time of 34.10.- a new open meet record. Not done - Barnaby anchors Weaver to a meet record in the 4 x 400 3:25.27 - 3 wins and 3 meet records
- Allison Barwise (Amity) clears 5' 6" to win the high jump crown and Kim Johnson leads a 1-2 sweep for Norwick clearing 11' 0"
- Lindsay Creviserat (Glastonbury) gets to the front with just 50 meters left and goes on to win the 1600 in 5:01.16. Making sure he gets important team points Joey Bubniak gets the win in the boys 1600 for Danbury
- Weaver takes the two girls straight away events with Catherine Milledge and Sahnique Castella going 1-2 in the 55 in 7.30. Thier teammate Cassandra Bennett takes the HH in 8.31. Austin Von Ohlsen (Ridgefield) is the fastest boy in the state taking the 55 in 6.48
- Danbury holds off Wilbur Cross to take the Sprint Medley Relay in a new meet open record of 3;37.34 - 3;37.51 - the #11 and 12 times in the USA for 2009
- Cheshire junior Rachel Aliotta takes the shot put by 5' with a toss of 41' 6.5".
- Benjamin Nollet (E.O. Smith) takes the high jump with a leap of 6' 6"
- Olivia Massey (Staples) takes the long jump with a 17-10.25 leap
- Three vaulters clear 14' with Seth Auger (Plainfield) getting the win on fewer misses
- Danbury claims boys team crown over Weaver. Weaver takes the final event of the day the 4 x 200 in 1;45.50 and claims the girls team crown

Slowly the season in Connecticut has been building toward a few key showdowns at this weekend’s State Open Championships at the New Haven Track and Field Center. Two state records are possible and a number of dyestat metro elite performances are sure to be recorded when the day is done.
Those looking to take in the possible new state records will have to split their attention between the track and the field. On the track possibly the hottest race will be the boys 600 meters where recent state record setter Cas Loxsom (Wilbur Cross) will take on Daundre Barnaby (Weaver). It should be a classic race of distance strength vs. sprinters speed. At last week’s Class meets Loxsom set the current state record with a 1:20.87 clocking and the next day Barnaby came close with his own 1:20.98. Assuming the two get off the line clean and without any bumping a sub 1:20 clocking could be needed to win. Both runners will also be part of relay teams looking for state titles as well. Loxsom will be on the end of Wilbur Cross’s sprint medley and Barnaby will be on Weaver’s 4 x 400 team. Barnaby will have a busy day having also to face the states best short sprinter Austin Von Ohlsen (Ridgefield) over 300 meters
In the field Emily Ando (Weston) became the first Connecticut female pole vaulter to clear 12’ 0” indoors or out in winning the SWC meet. Ando is sure to be pushed by Kim Johnson (Norwich) with Julie Sitver, also of Weston, a dark horse having cleared 11’6” at the SWC meet.
The boys shot put may not produce a new state record, but the battle between Jacob DeValve (Manchester) and Brad Kontra (Fairfield Prep) could be a classic. Robert Guider (Danbury) and the Plainfield duo of Chad and Aaron Nadeau should not be counted out.
Hamden comes into the weekend with the top seed in the boys 4 x 800 relay and after a win at the Yale Invitational a few weeks back against some of New York’s best team will look to add the Open Championship to the schools trophy case, but then there is the always powerful distance program Danbury who will not be running for second.
The girls sprints and sprint relay will see athletes from Danbury and Weaver face off a number of times Teyanna Green (Danbury) will have her hands full with Sahnique Castella and Catherine Milleredge from Weaver. Chrisma Green (Danbury) will try to upset the top seeded Milledge and her Weaver team mate Marsha Raynor in the 300 meters before they all meet on the track for the days final event the 4 x 200.
There are only 2 runners under 3:00 in the girls 1000, but Cassy Hunter (Norwich Free) and Brianne Mirecki (East Lyme) should be not get to caught up with each other because aggressive running 9th grader Medinah Nabadduka ( Windsor) will sure be in the mix.
Meg Ryan (Fairfield) is the top seed in the 1600 meters by almost 11 seconds and will be looking to dip under the 5:00 barrier. Joe Bubniak (Danbury) is seeded only 4th in the boys 1600. But has a 4;17.01 clocking to his credit this season at the Hispanic Games in New York and could be simply looking to sit and kick after having run the 4 x 800 at the start of the meet. |
