CARDIAC HILL PLAYS MAJOR ROLL IN RACE OUTCOMES

Having a signature hill is a characteristic of many cross country courses.  There are the famous Back Hills, Freshman Hill and Cemetery Hill of Van Corlandt Park, the Bowl of Holmdel(NJ), The Switch Backs and Reservoir Hill at Mt Sac(Ca), and the Camel Backs of the NXN Portland Meadows Course(Or).  Right up there with them is Cardiac Hill of Long Island’s Sunken Meadow State Park.  Hopes and dreams can be crushed or realized on these hills, some will fly over them while others will struggle to the crest.  At the New York State Public Cross Country Championships at the Sunken Meadow 5000 layout, just about every one of the ten individual titles and many of the team crowns were decided on this climb.  Full meet report

Can anybody be able to stop Fayetteville-Manlius or Stogsdill?

Those are the two major questions going into the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships this weekend. The Fayetteville Manlius girls have won the last two NTN Championships, once again are undefeated this season, look stronger than ever and look like a sure winner this weekend. Chris Stogsdill (Marcellius) has not lost to another New York runner this season, in fact he has lost just to one runner and it took a new Van Cortlandt Park course record for “Stogs” to get beat. Can somebody knock these two off of the top will be determined at Sunken Meadow Saturday and here is a look at their races and the other championships to be decided.

Section teams will be wearing color coded t-shirts in the races, here is a key to the teams:

Sec 1 - Columbia Blue
Sec 2 - Maroon
Sec 3 - Yellow
Sec 4 - Red
Sec 5 - Lilac
Sec 6 - Orange
Sec 7 - Dartmouth Green
Sec 8 - Kelly Green
Sec 9 - Royal Blue
Sec 10 - Ivory
Sec 11 - Navy Blue

Girls

Class AA

Defending Champions – Fayetteville Manlius and Hannah Davidson (Saratoga)
Contenders for the team title- US & NY #1 Fayetteville – Manlius should stand alone here, but you can never count out US #13 & NY #4 Saratoga.
Highest returning individual finisher – Shelby Greany (Suffern) 2nd in ‘07
Contenders for individual title – Greany, Lizzie Predmore (Shenendehowa), Courtney Chapman (FM), Hannah Luber (FM) and McKenzie Carter

Class A

Defending Champions – Burnt Hills and Emily Lipari (Roslyn)
Contenders for the team title- US #11 & NY #3 Burnt Hills has one of the best 1-2-3 punches in the nation which could carry them to the title..
Highest returning individual finisher – Lipari
Contenders for individual title – The “A” race has just as much individual fire power as the “AA” race. Defending Federation and Footlocker 6th placer Emily Lipari (Roslyn) leads the list of those who could contend for the title. If Lipari is off at all look for the Burnt Hills trio of Samantha Roecker, Molly Pezzulo and Meaghan Gregory to be right there along with the newest New York star Ailsing Cuffe (Cornwall), and Danielle Winslow(Queensbury).

Class B

Defending Champions – East Aurora and Catherine Lusandri (East Aurora)
Contenders for the team title- East Aurora, Pearl River and North Shore will battle for the team crown
Highest returning individual finisher – Brianna Welch(North Shore)
Contenders for individual title – Welch, Lauren Mullins (Johnson City), and Samantha Nadel(North Shore)

Class C

Defending Champions– Greenwich (moved down to Class D in ’08) and Caitlin Lane (Greenwich)
Contenders for the team title – Bronxville, Tully, Newark Valley and Rhinebeck should be the top three teams
Highest returning individual – Erin Cawley (Newark Valley) – 2nd in ‘07
Contenders for the individual title – Cawley, Samantha Watson (Schuylerville),and Caitlin Hudson (Bronxville) should all be in the running.

Class D

Defending Champions – Geneseo and Mary Kate Champagne(Seton Catholic)
Contenders for the team title – Greenwich looks to be the strongest team in this class, but Seton Catholic could be in the hunt.
Highest returning individual – Genna Hartung (Seton Catholic) – 2nd in ‘07
Contender for the individual title – With a possible domination by Greenwich look for their top runner, Roxanne Henningson, to be in contention for the individual crown along with Genna Hartung the highest returning finisher from ‘07.

BOYS

Class AA

Defending champions
– Warwick and Pat DuPont (Fairport)
Contenders for the team title. NY #1 Shenendehowa has sat atop of the NY poll since day one and there is no reason to think they will not take top team honor although NY #4 Fayetteville Manlius could make things very interesting.
Top returning finisher – Alex Leuchanka (Warwick/Shenendehowa) – 4th in ’07 - transferred from Warwick to Shen over the summer.
Contenders for the individual title – Leuchanka may be the top returner, but he is no way a lock and will be pushed by Alex Hatz (Fayetteville-Manlius) and John Muller (Arlington).

Class A

Defending champions – Queensbury and Kyle Merber (Half Hollow Hills West)
Contenders for the team title – NY #5 Burnt Hills, NY #5 Wantagh and Pittsford-Mendon all are possible winners.
Top Returning finisher – Quimes Delacrus(Wantagh) – 8th in ‘07
Contenders for the individual title – DelaCruz, Joe Whelan (Hamburg), and Otis Ubriaco (Burnt Hills) all will be at or near the front.

Class B

Defending Champions – Shoreham Wading River and Alex Deir(Honeoye Falls-Lima)
Contenders for the team title. NY #2 Shoreham Wading River look to be the strongest team in the field, but East Aurora and Deir’s Honeoye Falls Lima team could knock them off. The race for the individual crown could have a large impact on the team championship.
Top returning finisher – Deir
Contenders for the individual title – The final race of the day could be the best individual battle of the day. Defending champion Deir will have to be at his best if he wants to hold off Chris Stogsdill (Marcelleus) who has not lost to another New York runner yet this season and has beat Deir in September at the McQuaid Invite. With his team depending on him look for Bobby Andrews (SWR) to be in contention as well. A very improved Mike hickey (Pearl River) could be a dark horse here.

Class C
Defending Champions – Newark Valley and Colby DelBene(Pawling)
Contenders for the team title – Defending Champion Newark Valley is the top rated team but they could get a challenge from Holland Patent.
Top returning finisher – Robbie Argentine (Conastota) – 5th in ‘07
Contenders for the individual title – Argentine, Max Straneva (Chenango Valley) and Cody Stanton (Jordan-Elbridge

Class D

Defending champions – Beaver River and Lee Berube(Ticonderoga)
Contenders for the team title – Newark Vally, Notre Dame-Batavia, Seton Catholic-Plattsburgh, Hawthorne Valley
Top returning finisher – Frank Johnson(Letchworth) – 2nd in ‘07
Contenders for the individual title - Mike Champagne (Seton Catholic) , Austin Lane (Greenwich) and Jon Eng (Norwood – Norfolk).
