Class C
New York State Class C Boys Cross Country Rankings - 11/9/08
Section indicated by number in parenthesis next to school name.
1. Newark Valley (4) Oh what a race it was to watch!! Defending state champions hold on to the title for another year by besting Holland Patent by just 1 point at the state meet. There were head to head battles throughout the race between these two powers, as the #2 guys on both teams finished within 1 second of each other, and the 9 sec. spread for the #3-4 for NV was forming a sandwich around the #3-4 for HP.  Everybody did what they could to pull it out. A great win for the 4 seniors on this squad.
2. Holland Patent (3) A tough 1 point loss for these boys but next year they return 4 of their top 5 and their soph. #6 was only 19 sec. behind the graduating senior on the team.
3. Jordan Elbridge (3) A heart-breaking loss last week to HP, however it didn’t slow down Cody Stanton and Mike Marrero at the state meet. Stanton was 5th overall and Marrero was 13th. With no seniors on this team it looks to be ready to battle HP next fall for team bragging rights at the state meet.  Another great year to look forward to for the fans in section 3.
4. Tully (3) Another top section 3 team that had a representative at the state meet Saturday.  Ohure Sam finished 11th in the race.
5. Irvington (1) Section 1 was well represented by the Irvington team and their flock of fans in green.  This team improved to 3rd. place overall with the great finishes of Saliani and Mathews in 7th and 12th respectively.
6. Gowanda (6) 4th place finish at the state meet with Nielson leading the team in at 20th place overall, 8th in team scoring.  Freshman, Kevin Brown had a great day, running in for a top 30 finish.
7. Canastota (3)  Another one of those tough section 3 teams that was very well represented by the individuals from their team that made the trip to the state meet this weekend.  Robbie Argentine finishes his high school XC career by placing 2nd. overall, as teammate Aaron Walker was close behind at 6th place overall.
8. James T. O’Neill (9) 5th place finish at the state meet on Saturday.  This team has only 1 senior in the top 5 and will be very good again next year.
9. Dobbs Ferry (1) This team was represented at the state meet by the Wortner brothers, Patrick and Brendan.  They both finished in the top 30 and will be returning next year to try to help their squad earn a team trip to Plattsburgh.
10. Berne-Knox-Westerlo(2) 6th Place at the state meet.  Team was led by freshman, Connor Devine in 41st. place.
11. Pembroke (5) 7th at the state meet with seniors, Bartholomew and Seward leading the team in their final high school XC race.
12. Voorheesville (2) Runners up to B-K-W in section 2 meet by just 1 point, with a 16:59 average and a 155 speed rating.  (#6 last week)
13. Rhinebeck (9) Very well represented at the state meet with all 3 individuals finishing within 6 seconds of each other in spots 25, 27, and 29. Lanf is the only senior in this trio and the others will return to battle for a team spot next fall.
14. Oyster Bay (8) 8th place finish at the state meet.  Jazwinski and Nakrin, both seniors, finish well in 16th and 17th.
15. Fredonia (6) Runner’s up to Gowanda last week, represented by Thomas Conti at the state meet. Conti finishes his HS career with a top 50 finish.
16. Greece Odyssey (5) Gave Pembroke a battle at the sectional meet and looking to improve on 2nd. place next fall.
17. Waverly (4) 2nd. place at the section 4 meet to powerhouse Newark Valley last week, Mullen finished 79th at the state meet.
18. Chenango Valley (4) Junior, Max Straneva looked almost too comfortable in winning the Class C individual title in 16:25 on Saturday.  Congratulations to him and his team for being well represented.
19. Babylon (11) 9th place finish at the state meet.  Ian Mathies led the team.  Eighth grader, Tyler McGarvey earned a lot of championship experience and will be a runner to watch next season in section 11.
20. Pawling (1) This team will be one to watch next year, as they have no seniors and 8th grader, Jorgensen, finished the season as their #2 guy running 18:39 on the tough Bowdoin Park course.

Class C

Section indicated by number in parenthesis next to school name.

1.    Newark Valley (4) Section 4 champions, one step closer to repeating as New York State Champions.  Using the speed ratings from just the 7 boys on all teams that qualified for next week (except Section X as there were no posted results) Newark Valley wins by 11.  It will be interesting to see how accurate this is.  Blazey would be 6th, with Birch and Friend in 10, 11 spots. Team took 5 of 10 top spots at sectionals with a 35 sec. time gap. Speed rating 160. (#1 last week)
2.    Holland Patent (3) Section 3 champions. It was as close as I had predicted all season, with Holland Patent at 62, Jordan-Elbridge at 62, Tully at 66.  Holland Patent takes spots 8-10 in the race with a 17:34 average. Speed rating 159. Only 1 senior in this 7. (#2 last week)
3.    Jordan Elbridge (3) These guys put up the fight of the weekend and came out on the wrong side of the foray. They averaged 17:29 and a 161 speed rating but were done in by the packing of Holland Patents group.  They send Stanton and Marrero, both juniors to the meet as individuals. No seniors in the starting 5, they will battle again next year, as HP has only 1 senior in their 5. (#4 last week)
4.    Tully (3) Came within 4 points of taking it all.  Finished 3rd in section 3 and will send Ohure Sam to the State Championships as an individual, Nate Weber is the alternate. Another team with just 1 senior. Averaged 17:34 and 160 speed rating.(#3 last week)
5.    Gowanda (6) Section 6 champions with a 16 point win over last week’s #18 Fredonia with a 155 average speed rating.  Nielson and Brown (frosh) go 1-2 at the meet to lead this team to the championship.  In scoring model using speed ratings for all teams quailified, Gowanda shows as 3rd place behind NV and HP. (#10 last week)
6.    Irvington (1) Section 1 repeat titlists after pulling out a 1 point win over favored Dobbs Ferry at the championships held at Bowdoin Park.  A great 1-2 finish by Saliani and Mathews to lead this team.  18:01 average with a 154 speed rating.  (#7 last week)
7.    Canastota (3)  In probably the deepest section for class C teams, Canastota finished 4th and had a 17:55 average with a 153 speed rating.  Strong front 2 that beat the front of teams ranked behind them with good support. Sending Argentine and Walker to the state meet. (#9 last week)
8.    Dobbs Ferry (1) Missed their trip to the state meet as a team by just 1 point and ran almost exactly as fast as winner Irvington (18:01.04 Irv. Vs. 18:01.09 DF) and speed rating identical (153.6) 154. Season long leaders, Patrick and Brendan Wortner will represent their team at the state meet as individuals, after going 3-4 in the meet. (#5 last week)
9.    Berne-Knox-Westerlo(2) Section 2 Champions with yet another meet coming down to 1 point. In this one B-K-W won against Voorheesville 46-47.  Team averaged 17:07 and a 152 speed rating. Led by Freshman, Connor Devine and supported by 3 other freshman in the top 7. (#14 last week)
10.    Voorheesville (2) Runners up to B-K-W in section 2 meet by just 1 point, with a 16:59 average and a 155 speed rating.  (#6 last week)
11.    James I. O’Neill (9) Section 9 Champions with a 6 point win over previously #8 ranked Rhinebeck.  Team averaged 17:17 and a 151 speed rating. Ward led the team with a 2nd. place finish at 16:17. (#13 last week)
12.    Rhinebeck (9) 2nd place at the section 9 meet with a 17:16 team average for a 152 speed rating. They will send Wills, Lang, and Nowick to the state meet as individuals.  (#8 last week)
13.    Pembroke (5) Section 5 champions  with a 148 speed rating. Beat Greece Odyssey by 3 points with Barholomew 2nd overall at 17:28. (#15 last week)
14.    Oyster Bay (8) Section 8 Champions with a 146 average speed rating at Bethpage state park.  (#12 last week)
15.    Fredonia (6) 2nd. place at the section 6 meet with a 148 speed rating.  Sending Conti to the state meet as an individual.  (#18 last week)
16.    Greece Odyssey (5) 3 point loss to Pembroke at the sectional meet with a 147 speed rating.  (NR previously)

New York State Class C Boys Cross Country Rankings- Week 5  10/13/08

Section indicated by number in parenthesis next to school name.

Newark Valley (4) These boys had 5 under 18:00 in September.  No big meets this month so far, keep an eye out for them to run really well and rested in the next 3 weeks.  They won their league meet this past week with Joe Blazey and Chris Birch going 1 and 2 in the race at 16:30 and 16:58. (#1 prev. week)
Canastota (3) Took the trip to the Bronx for the Manhattan Invite and had an average speed rating of 157.  With a 13:11 leader on the 2.5m course they are strong up front, followed by 13:18, then a big gap to 14:42, 14:48, and 15:09.  If #3-5 can make a jump in the next 3 weeks before their state qualifier they can run confident in a tough sectional meet.  They get a slight edge over JE in this one, as in a dual meet it would be 26-29 based on times. (#2 prev. week)
Jordan Elbridge (3) Another great section 3 team (makes me want to drive up to watch this meet at the end of the month)  that took the drive to the Bronx and Van Cortland park to run the fast 2.5 miler.  Leader Stanton ran 13:24, followed by Marrero in 13:36 before the spread back to 14:06, 14:47 and 15:12.  A 157.2 Average Speed Rating. Averaged 14:13 on the course. (#4 prev. week)
Rhinebeck (9) Dutchess Counties’ best Class C school ran well at Manhattan. 2 boys under 14:00 and the third at 14:03 is a good pack up front to battle with the teams in the state.  They earned a 152 average speed rating and averaged 14:48. HM prev. week)
Tully (3) Talk about traveling, these guys went all the way to the Disney meet in Florida.  Weber led the team with a 16:31, followed by Ohure in 16:49.  The gap to #3 at 18:06 leaves a big opening to be closed before sectionals.  They are tight at 3 and 4 with both guys hitting 18:06.  They averaged148 Speed Rating in Florida. (#3 prev. week)
Holland Patent (3) Another reason to watch the Section 3 meet in late October. This team has an average speed rating of 150.  No results posted for this past weekend. (HM prev. week)
Clinton (3) With their 17:49 avg. from Tully meet and their less than 1 min. compression they will remain in top 10 for another week. (#6 prev. week)
Irvington (1) No Results for this team, as their girls competed without them at the Byram Hills meet over the weekend. #5 prev. week)
Dobbs Ferry (1) Put their leader back on the course this past week for a dual meet in Van Cortland and it helped bring their team back on track, still missing one of their top 5 who would help their overall score move within striking distance of some of the teams ahead of them. (#10 prev. week)
Fredonia (6) Winners of the Varsity A race at Sunken Meadow this weekend, with a 138 speed rating.  They don’t have a big weapon up front but pack them in nicely from 18:33-19:03.  If that 30 sec. spread can all move forward together they will be a tough team. (#8 prev. week)
Honorable Mention:

Voorheesville (2) No results. (HM prev. week)

Pawling (1) No results found (#9 prev. week)
Trumansburg (4) Won their league meet this past week with Cody Scott going 17:23. (HM prev.)
Schuylerville(2) Ran at Burnt Hills invite, 131 speed rating, 16:55 leader. (Debut on rankings)
Port Jefferson(11) A 130 Average Speed Rating at Sunken Meadow on Sat. and a good leader at 17:55. (NR prev. week)

EDITORS NOTE
New Fab Five #1 Shenendehowa had all hands on deck at the Grout Run as they destroyed the field and a very fine Queensbury team with 18 points. The Plainsmen coached by Mark Thompson had an outstanding five man average of 13:39.67 and their compression was 34 seconds! SWR moves down to #2 in the Fab Five but keep in mind they put up some fast times and very good numbers at the Bob Pratt meet on September 20. Burnt Hills beat #5 FM last week head to head at Mc Quaid 80 to 88 in a battle of NYS powers. North Rockland makes its first appearance in the Fab Five at #4 off of their strong performance at the St. Anthony’s Invitational averaging 17:13.04 over the rugged Sunken Meadow course.
It should also be noted that several teams took a hit in the rankings this week because they had team members taking the SAT.
The Manhattan Colleges races next week will be simply exceptional. The Boys Eastern States Championship race may well be the greatest collection of teams EVER gathered for one championship race in the history of Van Cortlandt Park – and that my friends is saying a lot about the quality of the field!!! Stay tuned.
