STORY
St. Benedict's Prep and Doug Smith of Gill St. Bernard's made big statements in the boys' races. The Pingry girls won their fifth straight title and Ariel Quintana of Gill St. Bernard's made it two straight while Caroline Williams of Mt. St. Mary continued her breakout season with a victory to highlight the New Jersey Interscholastic State Athletic Association prep championships yesterday in Blairstown. St. Benedict's Prep proved that it's still a force to be reckoned with, even without All-America Brandon Jarrett, by winning its fourth straight boys' title, 60-71 over runner-up Peddie. The Villa Walsh girls, with five runners in the top eight, won the B Division for its first title since winning the A Division in 1997. Smith, a senior at Gill. St. Bernard's, held off a hard-charging Phil Wood of Pennington to capture his third straight B Division title in 15:29.6. Wood was second in 15:31.1. Smith and Wood ran under the time of 15:35.3 that Smith clocked at this meet last year, also at Blair. But it wasn't a record since the course was changed for this year's race. Quintana joined Smith to make it a Gill St. Bernard's sweep when the sophomore won the girls' B race for the second straight year in 20:49.5. Smith, who hit the mile in 4:52, was 25 yards ahead of Wood when he hit two miles in as 9:59. But Wood closed fast and finished a step behind Smith. Even though Smith beat Wood by 48 seconds in this race last year and by 24 seconds at the Patriot Conference Championships a month ago, Smith knew things would be much closer this time. ``This is a whole different Phil Wood,'' said Smith. ``At the Patriot meet he wasn't feeling real good and had a big race a few days after so wasn't running at his best percent. But I knew this would be a tough race because I saw that Wood finished just five seconds behind Rosa (Joe of West Windsor North) at the Mercer County meet last week,'' Smith said. ``So I expected him to push me the whole way. He's a great runner. Smith was excited about his performance. ``Everyone's been wondering when I'm going to run a fast race and I knew it had to be today,'' Smith said. ``It's November and this is the first of the state meets, so it was time to show everyone that I'm feeling good and ready to run.'' Williams, a junior at Mt. St. Mary, got a big gap midway through the girls' A Division race on her way to victory min 18:59.6. Williams, seventh a year ago, has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the state this season. ``Last year I was running in the 19s at the end of the season, so I've really worked hard at gradually improving and getting under 19, which I've done a few times now this season,'' Williams said. Last year, Williams ran in the shadow of teammate Liz Campbell, who was graduated last spring. ``I've never won a big race before since I was finishing behind Liz, so it's nice to be up at the front and get a big win like this,'' Williams said. Pingry overcame Williams' victory to win its fifth straight A Division title, 48-59. Pingry put four runners in the top nine to key the victory. ``We have a real strong pack and knew if we ran the way we could that we'd have a good chance to win,'' said Pingry captain Louisa Lee, ninth in 20:39.7. ``This is the championship season, so we treated like that and everyone ran hard. We wanted to keep our streak alive.'' Newark Academy, led by Joe Sydel (fourth in 17:35.3) and Ben Press (fifth in 17:47.2) won its first title since 1995 by capturing the boys B race, 41-87, over Pennington. St. Benedict's kept its streak alive thanks to a hungry and talented group of underclassmen and rock-steady senior Matt Jensen. St. Benedict's overcame the 1-2 finish from Pingry's Matt LaForgia (16:24.78) and Dan Schuchinsky (16:44.6) to win the A title, 60-71 over Peddie. Pingry was third with 72. Jensen was fourth in 17:12.6, freshman Jared Mason seventh, sophomore Garland Miller 12th, freshman Daniel Gaspar 16th and freshman Sergio Wilcher 21st. ``Our strength is our pack and that with an ace like Jarrett (now at Harvard), we'd have to run to our potential and stay close together and we could do this,'' Jensen said. ``A lot of these young guys have a lot of talent and potential and showed it today.''
