Chanelle Price 2:03.98 !

by John Dye

Chanelle Price was billed as the star of the meet, and she lived up to everyone's expectations in the girls 800.

As usual, Price blazed away from the opening gun. By the middle of the backstretch, Charlene Lipsey, a 2:09 runner in her own right, was hopelessly behind and losing ground. Price was flying like it was a 400 meter race instead of 800. She finished the first lap in a stunning 56.3 (left). Price tired, of course, on the second lap but still beat the previous fastest time in the US this year by more than 4 seconds (2:08.46 by Texas freshman Chelsey Sveinsson).

Did Price plan to run the first lap so fast? "No. I was planning 58 or 59," Price said, but she was pleased with the race.

"I ended last year at 2:02 and I start this year at 2:03, so I am ahead of last year at this time," Price said. She is training this year with hopes of peaking at the US Olympic Trials in the 2:00 range, which would be a new national high school record. Her goal today was 2:01 or 2:02. "I always set my goals high." Right -- a 2:01 or 2:02 would have been a PR and she is already the 3rd fastest US high school ever on her 2:02.38 at last year's USATF National Championships against elite women.

After Price finished, several other girls came along in very respectable times. Lipsey was second in 2:09.61 (US#3 this year), Emily Menges of Garden City was third in 2:10.72 and six more girls were under 2:20.
