DyeStat US#1 Performances
2008-2009 Indoor Season

3/9-3/15 Notables
  • No surprise 35 new US#1s added in the best weekend of the year, 18 boys, 17 girls (maybe more to come if split times available)
  • Major overhaul Of the 42 events on this list that were contested this weekend in the national meets (21 each gender), 31 saw new national leaders,16 on the boys side, 15 for the girls (this doesn't include the converted 1600/3200 marks)
  • NIN rules Of those 31 above-mentioned new national leaders, 23 came from Nike Indoor, compared to 8 from NSIC.  The talley was 11-5 for the boys, 12-3 for the girls
  • I can do better 10 athletes or relays used the inspiration and peak fitness for nationals to top their own US#1s: Devon Smith MD, Wayne Davis II NC, Albemarle boys 4x800, Erik Kynard OH, David Wilson VA, Stephen Saenz TX, Briana Nelson SC, Jasmin Stowers SC, Hempstead NY girls SMR, Southern Regional NJ girls DMR, Ciarra Brewer CA
  • I can top that On three occasions, athletes from one of the national meets topped a new standard from the other set a day or even hours earlier.  First, it was Lukas Verzbicas IL (NIN) one-upping Solomon Haile MD (NSIC) 5000 meters (both Friday).  Then Stephen Saenz TX (NIN Sunday) outdid Nick Vena NJ (NSIC Saturday) in the shot.  Finally, it was Conor McCullough CA outdoing himself in the weight, with his Sunday mark at NSIC topping his Saturday standard
  • I want it back Six athletes who had previously held US#1s reclaimed their place atop the list, three of them in direct confrontaions with the current leaders: Ashton Purvis CA took it back from Whitney Fountain NY in NSIC 200, Andrew Springer RI from Mac Fleet CA in NIN mile, Southern Regional NJ girls from Newton South MA in the NIN 4x800,   The others were Saenz in the shot, Emily Lipari NY in the NIN mile, and Tynita Butts VA in the NSIC HJ
  • I can't top that Track EC/New Bern NC and Blazin Raiders/Eleanor Roosevelt MD combined for six national relay titles at NIN, but in the five instances where they were racing their own US#1s they were unable to top their own lofty standards  Same thing with Lauren Chambers in the NIN WT
  • Guys vs Gals Here's an oddity: Of the seven US records set this weekend (and 10 for the indoor season), every one of them was on the boys side
