6/08-14 Notables

• Deceptive  There may have been nine US#1s this past weekend, but they only came in five events.  Andrew Springer RI and Lucas Verzbicas IL picked up three each, thanks to the fact that at the Midwest Distance Gala FAT splits were taken at the 1500 and 1600 marks in the mile, and the 3000 and 3200 marks in the deuce.  Springer and Verzbicas, incidentally, should meet in this weekend's NON 2-mile
• Girls distance wars  With her 4:44.28, Jordan Hasay took hold of the mile lead and, with her efforts and those of Amanda Winslow, Chelsey Sveinsson's previous trio of nation-leading marks have been erased.  She'll have a chance, though, to get a few of them back at NON this weekend.  Hasay, meanwhile, will go back to the 1500, where she'll likely chase her own USR again at the USATF meet in two weeks
• Upping the ante  The shot put has been the men's throwing event attracting the most attention this year, followed by the discus (thanks to Mason Finley), but with the throws of Justin Shirk PA and, now, Sam Crouser OR, javelin throwers have made their case, too.  Crouser and Shirk stand #2 and #3 all-time, after Crouser's #2 all-time throw of 238-11 this past weekend - which was also an American Junior record.  Unfortunately, they are not slated to meet as Shirk is signed up for NON and Crouser for USATF Jrs.
