Summary: Whowell indicated last weekend at the University of Illinois that she was going to run the 1600 at IPTT and not the 1600/800 double. Whowell and Jones separated themselves from the pack after a sluggish 2:33 800m split. Whowell tried to shake free from the freshman sensation but Jones held tight. With just 200m to go and the knowledgeable crowd on their collective feet, Jones and Whowell pulled dead even. It stayed that way onto the homestretch and through the finish. Whowell and Jones, completely exhausted, waited nearly a minute before the official results flashed on the scoreboard: Whowell won by a hundred of a second.
