Adron Gardner Invitational
9/22/07
Belen, NM

Rio Rancho 49 Gallup 53 Academy 71 Los Lunas 94 Belen 136 (10 Complete Teams)

Academy rested 4 of their top 5 from a week ago at Liberty Bell. Seniors Ben Johnson and Damon Campbell were looking at colleges. BenJo was at Wisconsin. While the other runners headed to the Foothills for a workout Saturday morning. The Chargers were still able to finish third behind Rio Rancho and Gallup. Rio Rancho pulled off a minor upset of SW#10 Gallup. The Rams have some promising news: last year’s, #1 Josh Bueno, ran in the JV race and finished second in 17:03. Gallup ran 4 of the top 5 that they ran at UNM. The one absent athlete was Maurice Touchine who was the team’s #5 at UNM. Gallup’s pack time was still a minuscule 20 seconds without Touchine. Rio Rancho is better than advertised, even without Bueno, and will continue to put pressure on Gallup and Cibola in the 5A division. Next week all three of these teams will be in action at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational. The Chargers will be back at full strength and the field will include SW#3/US#15 Los Alamos.

SW#5 Timpview, Utah

Nebo Invitational
9/21/07
Spanish Fork High School, UT

American Fork 34 Timpview 53 Provo 86 Lone Peak 98 Spanish Fork152

Last week Timpview was able to sneak by American Fork 41-47. This week American Fork was able to upend Timpview 34-53. The top 20 results from the Deseret Morning News did not have Timpview’s Jason Fairchild. It is not clear if he ran or not. If he is inserted after Krys Gardner (last week they finished within 1 second of eachother) Timpview scores only 1 point less and American Fork still wins easily. American Fork has shown marked improvement since BYU.

Page Steel/Lake Powell Invitational
9/22/07
Page High School, Arizona

Mingus 48 Tuba City 79 Ganado 106 Singua 145 Chinle 167 (17 Complete Teams)

The Boys from Mingus Union proved their newly gained Southwest ranking with a convincing win at Page. The Marauders were without their usual #1 Tim Freriks and still dominated the meet. Mingus ran 4 runners in the top 10 and would have placed 10 with Freriks who was the runner-up at last week’s 4 Corners Meet. The Marauders, once again, ran a tight pack between their usuall #2 and #5. This week that gap was 28 seconds which compares to 16 seconds last week. You can usually pencil in Freriks at 20-30 seconds faster than the team’s #2.

SW#8 Cibola, New Mexico

West Mesa Invitational
9/22/07
Albuquerque, NM

Cibola 25 Eldorado 45 Albuquerque High 71 Bernalillo 113 Valley 130

The Cibola Cougars came away with their second victory in a row. This week they defeated a solid Eldorado squad by 20 points in a small meet. The Albuquerque Public School District forces each team to host a meet. They then make sure that the meets have teams by scheduling other APS schools. APS also only allows squads to travel, out of Albuquerque, once a year. Due to APS rules Cibola runs 4 small “metro area” meets a year. Next week Cibola hosts their annual meet. Most of the top “metro area” schools running will be running at Albuquerque Academy leaving Cibola with another small meet. Cibola will see tougher competition again in two weeks when they compete in the Albuquerque City Championship at Albuquerque Academy.

Bob Firman Invitational
9/22/07
Eagle Island State Park, Boise, ID

Elite Boys: Crater 121 North Central 124 Orem 171 Mead 172 Mountain Crest, UT 174 Mountain View, UT 176 Central Valley 177 (19 Teams Total)

After the battle between NM#4 Crater and NW#1/US#3 North Central was over there was a tight battle that involved three Southwest teams. Six points separated 5 teams. SW#10 Orem came out on top of that battle and finished third. They finished just ahead of NW#6 Mead, SW (Bubble) Mountain Crest, SW (Bubble) Mountain View and NW#3 Central Valley. Orem’s 47 second spread helped them overcome their lack of a dominant front runner. Bryan Willoughby was their top runner finishing 18th. Mountain Crest ran well from 1-4 finishing all of those runners in the top 40. But the gap between their #4 and #5 must be closed if they wish to run with the top teams in the Southwest.

Girls

SW#1/US#2 Eldorado, New Mexico

West Mesa Invitational
9/22/07
Albuquerque, NM

Eldorado 21 Cibola 59 Albuquerque High 88 Valley 89 Bernalillo 131

Death, Taxes and the Eldorado girls dominating local competition are all constants. Over the last three years Eldorado has completely dominated every meet in the “Duke City.” This is the time of the year that Coach James Butler refines his team for tougher completion to come. Next week the Eagles crank it up again for the Albuquerque Academy Invitational. This will be a great comparison meet due to the fact that the Eagles race on that course twice a year. We will be able to judge them compared to their performance there over the last 3 years.

Division II: Greeley West 34 Thompson Valley 44 Niwot 103 Rock Canyon 132 Centaurus 166 (16 Complete teams)

Greeley West was without the services of their regular #1, Kendra Gerk. She was on a recruiting visit to Kansas. An attempt was made to change Kendra’s flight so that she could still run on Friday but it didn’t work out. What DID work out was the fleet feet of the remaining Greeley West girls. They were still able to hold off SW #10 Thompson Valley. Erica Hinchcliffe and Ashleee Smalley went 1-2 in front of the top two girls for Thompson Valley (Becky Schmitt and Laura Tremblay) who finished 3-4.

Eagle Island State Park, Boise, ID

Elite Girls: Mountain Brook, AL 64 Davis, UT 80 Trabuco Hills, CA 125 Timpanogos, UT 146 Orem, UT 196 (17 Teams Total)

The girls from Davis lost a tough battle with SE#4/US#21 Mountain Brook of Alabama. This week Davis was led by Natalie Haws who finished 4th. She was quickly followed by the team’s usual #1 Candace Eddy who finished 5th. Davis ran a spread of 1:17 with Haws running #1. Last week their spread was 1:46 when Eddy was their #1 runner. If Eddy was off her improved performance still would not have made up the 16 point deficit. Timpanogos, UT and Orem, UT also were impressive at the Firman meet.

George Young Elite Cross Country Invitational
9/22/07
Sanctuary Golf Course, Scottsdale, AZ

Xavier Prep 46 Mountain View-Mesa 66 Salpointe Catholic 100 Corona Del Sol 129 Cactus Shadows 130 (17 Complete Teams)

Last week Mountain View-Mesa ran without their usual #1, Cami Jackson, and still pulled off an easy victory. This week they were without Jayleen Rominson and they finished second to Xavier Prep. Inserting Rominson at 10 seconds behind Larsen (last week she finished 8 seconds behind her) and rescoring; Mountain View-Mesa comes home with 54 points that still leaves them behind Xavier Prep. Many had believed that Xavier Prep was a sleeping dragon thus far. Well the dragon may have awakened. Their front runners torched the field finishing 1-2-3. Their next group finished within 1:30 of their #3. This gap may not affect Xavier Prep in the small Arizona state races where the 4A and 5A divisions are split but it will affect them come SW Regional. After finishing second at the O’Connor invitational, Cactus Shadows made an appearance on the Southwest Bubble. Cactus Shadows was without Lauren Lazo who finished 2 seconds behind Marta Reichenbach last week. Plug Lazo into this race and they still finish forth; well behind Xavier Prep and Mountain View-Mesa. The bubble may have temporarily burst for Cactus Shadows.

Manzano Invitational
9/22/07
Albuquerque, NM

Sandia 31 La Cueva 39 Highland 78 Manzano 100 West Las Vegas 108

LaCueva was edged 31-39 by Sandia on Saturday. The Bears were without Carly Porter and Megan Quimby who ran #3 and #4 for the team last week. Their absence was felt against an improving Sandia squad. Next week the Bears travel across town to the Rio Grande Invitational. They follow that meet up with the Albuquerque City Championship. That meet should be used to grade a LaCueva squad that tends to “train through” small meets.
