Summary of California Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 29, 2007

SUMMARY AFTER WEEK FOUR (Sept. 29)
In an interesting turn of events, Oregon and the Northwest No. 1 team Jesuit (Portland, Or.) comes to California and scores a close win over a number of that states’ teams ranked between No. 8 and 15. On the same weekend, California’s No. 2 and 5 ranked teams, Carondelet (Concord) and Esperanza (Anaheim), respectively, go to Oregon and finish a convincing one-two at the Jim Danner Nike Pre-Nationals meet in Portland, convincingly defeating NW regional No. 3 Snohomish (Wa.) and No. 7 Boise (Id.). Carondelet was about one minute faster than Esperanza.
Top ranked Saugus dominated the mid-week South Torrance Bay Cup Invitational by more than five minutes with a 57-second gap. In a match up of Sunset League powers, Esperanza and Fountain Valley, Esperanza prevailed by just over one minute and had just a 37 second gap. This is almost the same margin that Esperanza held over Fountain Valley in the Woodbridge Invitational two weeks ago.
Redlands dominated the very demanding Yucaipa Invitational, winning with 33 points. The Terriers won by three minutes and had a gap of just 38 seconds. Foothill (Santa Ana) and Murrieta Valley (Murrieta), ranked No. 4 and No. 7, respectively, rested but will be back to invitational action this coming week.
The big surprise this week was the emergence of Rancho Buena Vista (Vista), which just edged No. 8 Torrey Pines (San Diego) for second in the Sweepstakes race at Stanford, 128 (94:43) to 135 (94:58). Rancho Buena Vista’s sudden improvement can be directly traced to the fact that it has five freshman in its top seven. Carlmont (Belmont) was at Stanford and chose not to run in the Sweepstakes race, but did win the Division I race with 69 points and a time of 95:55. In indication of just how close the battle is for a Top 10 ranking, Lutheran (Orange) just edged Oak Park, 86 (96:04) to 88 (96:14) — performances that are almost identical to Carlmont..
