DyeStat XC Region Review CA Girls

Summary of California Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 22, 2007

By Mike Kennedy, Dyestat CA Girls Regional Editor

SUMMARY AFTER WEEK THREE (Sept. 22)

One week after the Woodbridge Invitational, and one week before the Stanford Invitational, there was limited action -- headlined by the Pepperdine Invitational. Two top 10 teams were in action, but only No. 9 Carlmont (Belmont) was at full strength, finishing second to Warwick Valley (Warwick, N.Y.), 64 to 100 in the Sweepstakes race.

Carlmont defeated regionally ranked teams St. Mary’s (Portland) and Snohomish (Wa.). Esperanza, ranked No. 5, was also entered but ran in the Division I race, split its squad and were without its No. 1.

This week the Aztecs will face ranked Fountain Valley in a mid-week league contest and then travel north to the Portland Nike Pre-National meet. Saugus, ranked No. 1, dominated the Foothill League Cluster meet, despite resting two of its top five runners. Katie Dunn continued a fine string of outings, breaking Shannon Murakami’s course record. Redlands traveled to the Islands and won the Iolani Invitational with just 33 points and finishing 1-2.

Fountain Valley, ranked No. 6, dominated the grade level Dana Hills invitational with the No. 3, 6, 7, 8 fastest times, led by freshman Carmelle Garcia. Murrieta Valley, ranked No. 7, won the Southwestern League Cluster meet with three of the top six finishers.
Ponderosa (Shingle Springs), ranked No. 10, won the Yolo Invitation with just 22 points.

With the Stanford Invitational this weekend a couple of questions could begin to be cleared up. 1) Are there any challengers emerging to challenge Saugus, and 2) what other team will step up to join the long jam of teams behind the Centurions?
