Alan Webb edges Ricky Brookshire in pulsating finish

Alan Webb, VA South Lakes, prevails over Ricky Brookshire, NC Watauga, in a pulsating finish.
There were three lead changes in the final 200-meter straightaway after Webb and Brookshire
broke away from a 10-man pack late in the race. (Splits for the leaders were 4:47 and 9:49 for mile
and 2 miles).  Webb finished in 15:03.39, just half a second ahead of Brookshire, who ran the
fastest 5K ever by a North Carolina boy.

The next 7  were all under 15:30 - Mason Ward, Colerain OH; Brian Kerwin, Christian Brothers NJ;
Chris Emme, The Woodlands TX; Hendrick Gerrits, Campbell County WY; Ian Dickinson,
Milton GA; Sean Jefferson, Atlantic FL; and Luis Bordes, The Woodlands.

Brookshire told Charlotte Observer sports writer Brett Honeycutt that Webb's was one of the greatest
kicks he had ever seen.

"That will probably go down as one of the greatest races in high school history.  We both gave it
everything," said Brookshire. "We couldn't walk when we crossed the line.  We were pleading
with everyone to help us up.  He (Webb) is supposed to be the next Jim Ryun, so I can't be upset,
but obviously I am.  We're going to meet again during Thanksgiving (Foot Locker South Regional),
and you know we're going to tee it up for the nationals."

Brookshire leads at 2-mile mark, with Webb (blue) and Ward (red) alert
for a breakaway; Brookshire did, but Webb stayed with him

The Woodlands TX is best in showdown of 10 of top 20 teams in US

The team competition lived up to expectations as the Woodlands TX narrowly beat
Christian Brothers Academy NJ, 108-121, with a score of  5-9-24-34-36 to CBA's 4-15-21-33-48.
Next were Bingham UT 160, Kingwood TX 162, and Campbell County WY 167.
The Woodlands averaged 15:50, led by Chris Emme (5th) and Luis Bordes (9th).
