GIRLS RACE OF CHAMPIONS - INDIVIDUALS

by Rick Hill

Awards to Top 25
Projected winning time: 17:25
Top 10: Under 17:59
Top 35: Under 18:59

What to watch for: Individually, the girls' prime time racers will be Coon and Markopolous from Saratoga, the Zeigle twins, Jackie and Laura from Bingham, and Laura Zeinner from Colerain. The youthful twins of Bingham will challenge Coon and Markopolous right from the race start. While just sophomores, they have been racing for years at national age group competitions and are fearless competitors.

Look for the twins to take an early lead through a sensible first 400 and continue through a well-paced and strong first mile. They likely will be followed closely by Coon, Markopoulas of Saratoga; Whitney McAlpine and Jamie Weiler of Kingwood; Alicia Craig of Campbell County, and Felicia Guliford of Gallup, New Mexico. As a 9th grade sensation in 1998 she finished an outstanding fourth place in the Footlocker National Championships.

This tight front pack of individuals and teams will stay together until the hill at the 2.4K mark. At some point the Zeigles will put real pressure on the field, most likely through the hill and around the lake. They will try to make a break at this point for a 1-2 finish to lock up a team title. But these young ladies may just be a year away from greatness and watch Felica Guliford and Danielle Coon challenge for the lead after just 2 miles. However, early season results suggest that it will be Laura Zeigle's day as she vaults into the national spotlight with a close win over Coon.
