1999 Foot Locker South
Boys Preview
Alan Webb, Ricky Brookshire, David Adams

Al Webb has been called the next Jim Ryun after
running 4.06 as a sophomore. He has followed that up
this XC season by breaking Sharif Karie's state course
record. Karie went on to come within 30 yards of
winning the Footlocker Final before he collapsed and
later ran 4.02 outdoors. Webb is better than Karie.
Many think this will be a close race, but I think it
will only be as close as Webb allows it. Brookshire
has run 4.11 and is having a great season. His only
loss was to Webb. Adams shocked the South with his
amazing record shattering performance in the SC state
meet. Can he follow it up here? Hass has had a great
season and Texas champ Maddox is undefeated. Others
to look for include the nation's top Soph Lockhardt,
Wyatt and the erratic Joseph, state champion of
Florida. If Joseph winds up in a good college
program, he could become the next Senneca Lassiter.
One darkhourse to look for is Jake Raines of
Mississippi. His state is no mecca of distance
running but this sophomore has won most of his races
by more than 2 minutes. Many in the South will be
upset about their perceived low ranking. Keep in mind
that there are 2 majors factors. One, the South is
much stronger than last year or any recent year.
Secondly, the South typically has the highest number
of no shows. For example, if you are ranked 40, it
is likely that at least 7 runners ranked ahead of you
won't run.
Notes:

Banned-runs in a state in which they are not allowed
to run in the Footlocker Meets. Note that seniors
from PA probably will run the Footlocker since they
will be banned but since their HS XC career is over
the ban is meaningless.
