Cross Country 1999

1999 Foot Locker Northeast
Boys Preview

Dan Coval, Tristan Colangelo, Aaron Emery are top 3

by John Molvar

11/23/99 -- Danny Coval hasn't lost a race in 2 years

(until Saturday's second to Tim Keller at the

Mid East Championships in Dayton) but he also

hasn't been allowed by the Pennsylvania governing

body to run outside the state. He is used to winning big

and having no competition. How will he react to real

competition? I expect him to have no problem with

competition and I think he will win this race. After

Coval, there are several evenly matched runners, none

of whom can kick with Colangelo. Tristan likes to run

just hard enough to win, but he won't have that luxury

on Saturday. He will have to go all out and I expect

him to be up to the challenge. Aaron Emery had an

emergency appendectomy in early September. He came

back racing immediately and was getting beaten badly.

Many people didn't understand and kept complaining

that I was ranking him too high. Last week he won the

NY Federation meet and is ready for the big time

again. Jabaut hasn't faced much competition this

year, but with a 4.11 mile to his credit, there is no

doubt about his ability. Kerwin leads the perennial

awesome CBA team. Huber got roughed up at the NY

Federation meet but will look to rebound. Roba and

Vasilyadis came out of nowhere and are unknown even in

their own state, but could surprise a lot of runners

in this race. McGovern has been up and down all year

but looks ready now for the big race after winning the

New England race..

to run in the Footlocker Meets. Note that seniors

from PA probably will run the Footlocker since they

will be banned but since their HS XC career is over

the ban is meaningless.
