Boys Preview

The Race of the Day:  Donald Sage and Dathan Ritzenhein

by John Molvar

11/23/99 -- The race of the day.

All season fans have wanted to know who is better,

Sage or Ritzenhein. Dathan was 7th in

last's year's Final and he followed it up with

a win in the 2 mile at the NSO as a 10th grader. He

has won every Michigan XC race by a large margin.

Only Sage can stop him. Sage has never run

Footlocker, but there is a little known fact that Sage

gave George Torres his toughest race last year. At

the Illinois state meet Sage ran stride for stride

with Torres for 2.5 miles before breaking. No one in

the Footlocker Final was able to stay with George past

2 miles. In last year's state meet, Sage hung on for

second, ahead of Ed Torres who went on to finish 6th

in the Final. Since then, Sage ran a 4.09 mile and

put in the biggest summer of training by a high school

runner since Gerry Lindgren in 1964. He went as high

as 19 miles per day. This season he has won every

race by a country mile. This battle between Dathan

and Don will be a sight to remember for those lucky

enough to see it. I give Sage the slight edge.

Several runners have a shot at 3rd including Turner

who has run 4.09 in the mile, Jake Flynn who was a

Finalist last year, and surprising Colorado state

champion Troy Hernandez who came out of nowhere.

Others who figure prominently include, MO champ

Tegnkamp and OH champ Padgett. Schnieder and Fisher

also have good chances at qualifying.

to run in the Footlocker Meets. Note that seniors

from PA probably will run the Footlocker since they

will be banned but since their HS XC career is over

the ban is meaningless.
