Invitational - Boys

Notes by Mark Friedline:

The Girls Invitational race was won by Margaret Martin of St. Paul's of Mobile, AL,  with a time of 12:25.65.  Margaret surged away from a pack at the mile mark and eluded pursuers to the finish line. Freshman surprise Elizabeth Wancowicz of McGill-Toolen seconded in her first ever CC race.  (Wags in the crowd afterward reflected that due to the short training pre-season her coach had probably not had time to tell her that it was OK to go for the win).  Nicole Possey led a swarm of McClay runners (3,4,11,16,30) to take the team title in a powerful statement to1999 Championship hopefuls St. Paul's, Murphy, and McGill-Toolen (all of Mobile).  The 1998 6A Girl's Champs Pelham, AL, team was unable to compete because their bus broke down and they arrived minutes after the Girls Invitational race started.

Tiffany McWilliams of Red Bay coasted to an individual win (12:29) in the Girls Open race.  Unfortunately she didn't bring along enough team to enter the Invitational race.  Smith's Station took 5 of the top 8 scoring postions to win the team title.

The Boys Invitational race was an exciting strategic race finished off with a powerful last mile surge which identified the most gutsy runner.  Jimmy Wiggins of St. Paul's of Covington, LA, strung out the determined pack over the last mile to win in a fine 15:48.30.  Foley, AL's Augie Funk seconded at 15:56.09, thereby sending notice to AL 6A fellow competitors Matt Tillman of Smith's Station, Daniel Ferguson of Pelham, and Keven McDonough of Auburn that he thinks the State Championship should come to LA (Lower Alabama) this year.  Eighth grade marvel Ryan Deak of McClay took 3rd in 15:59.91 to lead McClay to the team title (a SWEEP of both Boys and Girls Invitational races).  Ryan can be seen again soon in the 25-Sep-99 Great American Cross-Country Festival in Charlotte, NC.

Jake Raines of East Central, MS ran away with the Boys Open race with a 16:13.91.  The next finisher was 1:15 back while Jake enjoyed the scenery.  We heard Jake's favorite movie is "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner".  Unfortunately he also didn't bring along enough team to enter the Invitational race.   St. Paul's of Covington, LA won the team Open Title.
